MG-TF 160

I would buy the 01 1.8 Mx5 for the same price but with a lot more miles.

That is a nice low milage so should be fine for quite a while for you :)

A second slower 0-60, thirstier, mileage not mentioned so very likely quite high.

I reckon the OP got a very good deal, the TF is a good car. Fortunately, as proved by this thead, the majority of people can't see past their own pre-conceptions so the prices are nice and low for those that know. I wonder how many have actualy driven them...

Is 0-60 that important?

I know id rather have the slower car 0-60 but the nicer to drive.

0-60 isn't that important on a car like this - they're all going to be fairly quick. What matters on a car like this is handling - and it's in this area that the MX5 runs circles around the TF.

Ignore the haters!

My Dad has an 02 plate 160, and my Mum an 03 plate 160. They are both reliable, neither had problems!. The steering is sharp and the car responds well, seems to grip nicely as well. The MG TF is not just a reskinned F, it's a much stronger designed and built shell and they suspension has been further tuned for driving enjoyment.

At the end of the day it comes down to people driving both and deciding which one they like the best! Performance isn't really key with this sort of car, otherwise we would all be getting Elises or VX200's

I would have thought the owner of such a decent marque, would know what a decent car looked like!

Muncher, though, owned an MG ZR 1.4 with windup windows and no central locking, paid £6-7k for it, and thought it was a 'good deal' :D

I'll get hassled on MSN for that ;)

I friend borrowed an MG TF135 for a week and was so impressed he went out to buy one. I told him to have a quick test drive of the MX-5 and he now owns a MX5-1.8is. Nuff said.

Paid £8k for it, sold it for over £6k two years later, enjoyed it, nothing at all went wrong :)

Regardless of that, £6k is cheap as chips especially as the price goes up if/when they start to be produced again!

My mum always wanted a brg MGF years ago.

Went to the motorshow and sat in a TF, but the big problem was we (purposely) came right from nosing round the S2K, was clear the TF wasn't as well built etc inside.

But personally think they aren't bad, especially at the prices they can be had for now, and even better if you get one with the handling and brake upgrades (lovely 4 pot brembos).

That said, in everything I've read they've always said nice car, but they'd always go for the MX5 every time.

My mum does now own a brg MX5 1.8s and it's a hoot to drive, but I think the TF still isn't a bad car.
