My mother had a (new) MGF a couple of years ago. I think she owned it for 8 weeks and it spent 7 of them in the garage being repaired.

Cheap for a reason mate, there ,generally, rubbish!

Much better convertibles on the market imo.

They're decent little cars - far from "rubbish". Once again I smell the faint whiff of "my mates moms best friends sister-in-law owned one, and said it broke a lot"

Got average write ups in the press, and certainly much better than the MGF it replaced.

However, the MX-5 and the MR2 Roadster are much, much better cars overall.

They are rather good cars

Mid engined, rear wheel drive. Far more focussed than the MGF and better looking too IMO.

Nicer interior then both the Mk1 and Mk2 MX-5 and better looking than both too (IMO)

Handle very nicely. The one you've pictured looks like the 135. If you can get it with the trophy pack as this has harder, lowered suspension and the wheels from the 160

They're picky on tyres and you should replace all four at the same time really (at the very least never mix on an axle). Use Toyo Proxies T1-Rs or Goodyear Eagle F1s GSD-2 (don't use the GSD-3s)

Check for worn bearings and buckled wheels as the one my parents bought had both and it lead to skitty handling. When replaced it was a different car

There isn't that much of an issue with reliability. Just wait until the engine has warmed up (including the oil) before revving above 3k rpm to avoid HGF. Check the coolant weekly. A lot of the problems with the MGF have been ironed out (it was a fairly comprehensive facelift) and the hydragas suspension (another issue) has been replaced with springs. Decent boot space too

Depends which TF.

Proper one:

Modern one that is nowhere near as good as the Mazda MX-5:

;)

***edit***

Being serious for a few seconds, I don't rate the current TF all that highly. If you want a cheap, reasonably fun roadster then buy a Fiat Barchetta. If you want a small sports car, buy a Mazda MX-5.

however both are more ugly :p

To buy an inferior car simply because it looks better is something that only women and homosexual men do. The MX5 is a far better car and is priced similarly, there's no excuse to choose an MG/Rover over it.

It's not a far better car!

Yes, it is a better car, but not greatly. Everyone just dismisses the MG out of hand - the Mk2 MX5 is just a facelifted Mk1, released in the 1980s after all so age of design probably isn't it!

Let's see - I can sit on the wrong side of the car, and have the wrong wheels being driven with a Barchetta, or I can buy a TF.

Yeah, think I'd probably go with the Barchetta to be honest.....

no its something that the majority of buyers do. people who buy an ugly car just because its a better car than a better looking car are in a very small minority if car buyers i would imagine.

And that is why crappy cars that are at least halfway sensible looking still get made. If buyers took a few moments to actually educate themselves on what they're about to buy.....

Look at the Customer Survey stuff - people buy cars that are known to have problems, and then complain about them. How about not buying the damn car in the first place? Or is that way too logical for certain sectors of the population to comprehend?

My mum owns one... Not a half bad car... as people say on here, it apparently has a Headgasket of Cheese... but if you treat it well theres no reason why it shouldnt be okay...

My mum owns an 04 Plate she brought it for just shy of 11k, with 8,000 on the clock, shes done 3k in it since having it and not had one problem with it...

I would hope not with such a low mileage....

no, most people dont care about 0-60 or how well a car really handles under extreme pressure, or bhp figures, or 100-0 braking times/distances. they want a car that has the righ amount of doors, right amount of seats, right size, right price.

to educate them would be pointless, as they dont use the cars like motorheads, they use the car as a means of transport. thats why crap cars that look half good are made, the reason why so many dull and boring colours are available. the majority of people dont care.

so when someone says i want a 2 seater cheap cab, they buy what they think looks best.
