Seen a few 2002 plate MG ZR 180s 2.5 for around £850-£1k these seem fantastic value for money, any problems with the car a buyer needs to check? Also whats the performance and conering like? They seem a bit big to chuck around, are they any fun to drive? Do they drink much??

Many thanks :)

MG ZR is the rover 25, right? if so, i highly doubt they had a 2.5 litre engine if thats what youre referring too

the Rover 45 (MG ZS?) had the 2.5 v6, 170-190bhp id expect.

sounds like you need to take a test drive.

Well thanks guys :p

My last tank through mixed driving and a whack of hoonage I got 18mpg....but turns out my car has been using too much fuel as it was overdue for a service and 2 of the spark plugs were knackered so the car was misfiring :D

Around town and general use you'll get anywhere between low to mid 20's on a motorway if your an extra special boy you'll get mid 30's.

I normally get 250 - 270miles out of a 55L tank :)

Any other questions about it please ask, I did a summary about the ZS not too long ago which pretty much covers everything, I'll dig it out when I get back from the chip shop.

Going off a previous thread on here :)

Good cars generally, with the 2.5 V6 you avoid the head gasket failure problems which plagued most of the rovers/MG's of the time.

If i needed a cheap as chips 'performance' car they'd be on my shortlist for sure.

They have a few problems that hampers performance, VIS something I think. Hard to fix as parts are uncommon. I'd love to drive one, I've got a ZS 1.6.

I own a ZS 120 with a 1.8 engine, pretty good for cornering and handling, better than expected for the size. Pretty fun to drive, though my previous car was a 306 HDi so most things would seem fun to drive heh.
No experience with the 2.5 first hand, but have heard they're pretty quick but fairly thirsty.

Bah, you all knew I'd have to jump into this. :p

Which parts are uncommon? The only things you have trouble sourcing are the Mk2 body panels, and for a grand it's going to be a Mk1.

Common issues:
- Clutch hydraulics ropey. Someone on the owners club does a full kit to replace the lot with a superior system, I think it's about £160.
- VIS motors in the inlet manifold can fail, but 10 mins and a soldering iron will fix them. Alternatively, refurbed motors are quite cheap, at about £30 and really easy to find.
- Inlet manifold swirl flaps can work loose, but they won't actually break off and cause damage. You'll just have a rattly manifold, as my ZT 190 with the same engine had. Saying that, it did have 130k on the clock.
- Make sure the cambelts have been changed. They need doing at 6 years or 90k, whichever comes first. This can cost £450 to have done!

...and that's it. For the most part, they're very reliable.

Common misnomers:
- The head gasket is NOT prone to failing on the V6.
- You CAN still get every part off the shelf, or eBay failing that, save a very small number of exceptions. Rimmer Bros specialise in MG Rover parts, and their online catalogue makes ordering the correct part painless and quick.
- Handling will be poor as it is FWD. Tiff Needell described the ZS180 as the best front-wheel drive car he'd ever driven.

I've just sold my ZS TD (remapped and with many other mods, making it near-ZS180 quick) and I do miss it - the handling was brilliant, and it cost me bugger all to run.

Quoting Tiffy here:

For a FWD it's about the best handling I've experienced, they've got the balance front and rear right.

I'd say thats probably a little of the mark though, going off other publications it never ends up in things like "top 10 FWD shootout" etc.

Would expect 205 gti, 106 gti, 306 gti, clio williams, clio 172, integra, racing puma, that kind of stuff to dominate that.

Not bad for the money provided the engine doesn't need a lot chucking at it. Would get the saloon with the big wing as the hatchback mings.
