Hi guys, need a little advice.

Girlfriend has just had her car written off. She is now going to be in the market for a second hand car. One of her preferred choices is the MG ZR.

My query is given what happened with Rover, would she be wise to purchase one of these vehicles? I'm no expert so this could be a silly question.

Any advice on the idea of it appreciated.

Thanks

It would be unwise to purchase an MG ZR. Do not be taken in by the sporty styling. It is a Rover 200 in drag, with Rover 200 engines. There are better alternatives.

'tis right.

Not for nothing did Rover go out of business, had they made decent cars that people wanted, perhaps we'd still have a Rover marque?

They're brilliant cars, really fast, handle excellently and look sporty too.

Ok, I lie. They're decidedly average.

On the plus side they're cheap cos of what happened to MGR, plus they get good fuel economy. On the negative side, they're pretty dull to drive and have pretty poor build quality.

Mine however is awesome cos it's Tyhoon :D (the flippy blue/purple paint) a bit like this one.

My sister hasv finally outed hers and got an MX5. The MG was a complete disaster from start to finish. It cost her more to maintain in the last 10 months than the car was worth.

Don't bother, get anything but one of these.

No surprises here - as usual someone mentions an MG/Rover and we get loads of posts slating it

They're not the best cars and they aren't the most reliable (mine has cost me a fair bit of money) but they're not bad cars

They are a lot of fun to drive - don't know where the dull to drive comment came from. One of the main things going for the car is how it drives!

If you're used to driving something like an Ibiza, A4, C30, Astra, et al then the MG is far better. The vast majority of cars I have driven have overlight mushy steering!

Oh, and it's not just a 200 in drag. This comment really irritates me. The cars are fundementally the same but with a few important differences. Would you say an M3 is a 316 in drag? An RS4 is an A4 1.6 in drag? Nope

If you do get one maintenance is crucial. Check that it's got a full history and that the coolant has been changed every two years - the coolant needs to be vacuum filled too. Check the coolant weekly and don't thrash it until it's warm

I wonder why that is. It's the same with the England football team isnt it, every time people mention it people put them down. Can't possibly think why.

Exactly. Yours has cost you thousands and thousands to keep on the road. For a small cheap hatchback this is so far beyond unacceptable it's a wonder you've not torched it.

but they're not bad cars

In 1995, no.

Dont you insult cars like the M3 and the RS4 by claiming the relationship between them and the cars they are based on is the same as an MG ZR to a Rover 200 becuase it's a blatant lie.

The relationship between a Rover 200 and an MG ZR is the same as the relationship between a 320i SE and a 320i Sport. And yes, a 320i Sport is a 3 Series in drag. Luckily however the 3 Series is a half decent car to start off with. The ZR is simply a 25 with a bodykit, revised suspension, and a sporty interior. Exactly the same as a Sport model adds on a BMW or an Audi.

Fair enough

I take back the M3/316 RS4/A4 comment

There are still changes like the sports suspension, different steering rack, etc though. Not just a body kit

Like I said, the changes are no different to the same changes every other manufacturer makes with a Sport model. This does make the ZR a 200 in drag.

MG Better than an Audi A4? I'll take that as the joke it must be.

Prior to me getting my Mondeo TD, I had an S Reg Rover 214 as a loan car for a couple of weeks.

The wipers didn't work, the starter rarely turned, the indicators didn't work, the headlights wouldn't come on if you'd left them on full beam, the Alarm went off randomly it used oil and refused to start after I'd left it at Birmingham airport for a week.

All this on a supposed 2 owner 67k mile car.
In fairness its bodywork was ok (no rust) but the doors fitted badly and it was quite stable @ 80MPH on the motorway.

It was generally a complete pile of crap that just underlined to me why Rover went the way they did.
