Hey guys....
Parents and I are interested in getting an MG-ZR....

Probably the old style... although if we can find a well priced one we would think about getting the new style one.

Is there anything i should know about the car? Any specific problems with the breed?

any feed back on the car from owners... or ex-owners

Thanks muchly

A guy I used to work with had one, he hated it. I once went out into the car park and he was actually hitting the bonnet of it shouting at the car.

I think they come in 105bhp and 160bhp flavours? Which one you looking at?

Hi, the mg zr will get seriously slated on here i'm afraid. I had one up until recently and in fairness i didn't think it was a bad car at all that was cheap to run for just over 3 years until the dreaded HGF (oh nooes rover disease! :p).

The general (and accurate) feeling on them is that at their price point you can get better value for money elsewhere, so unless you really like the looks/styling then you will probably find better options for your money looking elsewhere.

They come in 105bhp + 120bhp + 160bhp petrol variants + a diesel option.

The 160bhp one is actually pretty shifty, think 0-60 7.4 or so ? while still pulling very good mpg on a run.

i was looking at the 1.4 litre engine...

by the sounds of it im going to have take one for a drive.

How are they for reliability? do they break down a lot? any specific parts that wear out quickly?

The biggest worry is the ridiculously high amount of HGF which you can expect as early as 35k miles and a timebomb any time after that. Expect it to cost about £700 at a reputable garage to fix, only to go again in another 35k. Sound fun yet? :p

Bad things out of the way, i found it to be really easy trouble free motoring other than this.

I do like them and the 160 is certainly very nice and quick. HGF is an issue, however I've managedto put many thousands of miles on two Rover 200 1.4's and never had this problem yet my mate had one rover 216 and the hg went within a few thousand miles. I think it is relative pot luck sometimes with these.

I really wouldn't recommend a 105 zr to anyone, nippy for a shoping cart but you will get bored. Might aswell go for a Rover 25 as you pay way over the odds for the equivalent MG ZR.

dang...
this car wouldnt be used for massive commuting.. it would be for use by me and my mother *who is retired and would only use it for shopping and other little things... not massive commuting* we also would have a fiesta mk4 to share...so hopefully the head gasket failure would not come till later life if we buy a low mile-age car.

when they re-place the head gasket after failure do they not fit a new one which has had the issue resolved?

also getting a rover is out of question... its the look of the MG that we like.

HGF is never cured forever, some say a landrover gasket is better etc etc... my mates went twice skimmed twice and as a result started pinking and burnt the valves out. Short runs and nipping to the shops isnt going to do it any favours either, engine will never reach peak temps.

If a rover is out of the question I would at least try and get the 1.8 120 MG, but then with that in mind you get more performance for not a lot different economy with the 160. Are you actually interested in perfomance though?
