MG ZR

Whats the part that fails so regularly? Surely there is some preventative maintenance you an do, replacing waterpumps or something?

Is it not to do with the cooling, I remember someone saying fitting a larger radiator can help. May be complety wrong here though.

HGF is mainly due to chavvy owners ragging them from cold and the coolant being cold and the block being hot and the temperature differences between the two.

Coupled with a poor thermostat placing and a few other bits and bobs.

For £200-400 you can do all the fixes and basically eliminate the risk of it.

Or just dont rev the nads off it when its cold and do some trips to get it up to temperature.

If you go off what some people have said here, then my coupe wouldnt have any metal left on the head it would have been skimmed that many times due to the milage its done!

Its ok performance wise and looks good for the price IMO. My main problem with it is the interior, it feels incredibly cheap and the plastic is really poor quality.

A guy I used to work with had one, he hated it. I once went out into the car park and he was actually hitting the bonnet of it shouting at the car.

Was his name Basil, and was he threatening to give the car a damned good thrashing?

:D

Having owned one for over 3 years (and owned since it had only 12k on the clock) i completely disagree with this. At least in my case it had such mild use, absolutely never rev'd from cold, and hardly ever rev'd even when warmed up, all normal maintenance carried out yet it still went on 36,666 miles.

From what i hear its completely and utterly random.

ok cheers guys.. I think im going to take the risk.. i really like the car.. i am looking for performance but only being 17 (although 18 when we get it) im not sure if a 1.8 is do able although i would only be a named driver on my mums policy with about 8 years no claims and i wouldn't be driving it that much because i have my fiesta.

a friend of mine had a rover 25 years ago, does the "MG" still have the same interior? it was dated, even back then

whats the cost on something like that?

err..
well its not exactly dated... but its basic..
I might have a look around and see if theres a decent A3 in the same price range..

edit...
cant be bothered with an A3 the cheap ones dont look aggressive enough!

gotta find something good lol

I had one for 18 months

I had a 2002 1.8 120+ 5 door

When it worked it was fantastic. Handled very well and it was an absolute hoot to drive. Loads of fun

Unfortunately I had a large number of problems with it and ended up selling it. I replaced it with a 1.8 Astra Coupe but I really want the MG back. The Astra is just very dull in comparison

All of the advice regarding avoiding head gasket failure is good advice as it can avoid failures. Unfortunately, I followed that advice and mine went at just under 50,000 miles. It's critical that you keep a very close eye on the coolant levels and don't let them drop

The dealer who replaced the gasket also strongly recommended that you don't skim the head either

Get over to http://forums.mg-rover.org/

I personally wouldnt have one of these.

They break down and are basically a glorified rover 200.

Better cars out there for the money.
