MGTF 160 info please

put it this way taking that model from piston heads, you are looking at just under 1/5 of the value of the car to replace the head gasket with an uprated one (if not doing the work yourself).

If I just spent 5k on a car I wouldn't want to be spending £800 fixing and uprating the head gasket. Just my 10p worth.

They lost all of the money they were going to loose when mg/rover went under, my sisters lost about 3k over night. At the end of the day if you like the car, like the drive, and see the value in it then who am I to tell you what to and what not to buy?

Just experience with this model tells me to stay away, I have no doubt there will be other people who have had no issues at all and would swear by them. If you get a good example which has already had the work done then why not buy?

On another note, now that Nanjing Automobile have bought MG spare parts for the tf should be easy to come by for the forseeable future.

Dad's got a Silver X-Power TF160 Sprint with the alcantara trim, bought it a year ago with 3000 miles on it (!!!) for about 7k IIRC.

Nice enough car, very cramped though (width more than length, I feel very pressed up against the door driving it) and my eyes line up with the top of the screen which is a PITA.

Interior build quality is pretty poor, although most of the factory fitted squeaks and rattles can be fixed.

Other than that, he hasnt had any problems with his but at that mileage you'd expect that. Not my cup of tea but if you like it then go for it!

When i had mine, first thing i done was upgrade the rad and ss pipes. Secondly i upgraded the bushes, try to reduce any problems occuring.

Then cosmetics Blueflame exhaust and £400 quid of ICE. There are loads of Mod's to be had, however i feel its a case of been there done that, and would not entertain me to have another one.

£800???

My mate in work had the HG on his MGF trophy done for £350, and that was with an uprated kit (not sure if it included the dowels)? The garage has a good reputation and he had no issues in the 25K miles he then put on it..

What was funny was he used to rag it from cold and we used to taunt him with HGF jokes, which he always said where a myth, until that is, it happened to him, then he was of the opinion there are 2 types of MGF, those that have had HGF, and those that are just about to have HGF!..

Saying that, my parents had a VVC that did 30K Miles with no issues, and my brothers had an MGF and MGTF and had no issues..

There is probably 2 or 3 known "fixes" for the HGF... the most popular is to install a PRRT, pressure release remote thermostat... this works quite well on K's with long coolant lines (i.e. when mid/rear mounted) with the rad at the front. Another is to install toughened dowels in the block and another is the uprated gasket itself. Most people do all three after their first HGF and it is a long long time until it happens again... usually ;)

Get an AA plan that includes a Parts and Labour warranty and don't worry about it.

Strengthened oil rail is a must if it's a thorough job you're doing :) Standard Land Rover uprated part, and is usually available with the HG set all in one.

Oh and check the coolant pipes, it would be advisable to replace them with SS ones.

Apart from that, the K series engine is the most fun lump I've ever had the pleasure of driving. :)

Ok all, many thanks for all the input. I'm pretty sure I'll end up getting one and I'll stick a grand in the bank for HGF time and get it done properley with the uprated parts as mentioned.

So your mission should you choose to accept it is to find me a good one ! ;) Anywhere in the country and will go up to 7k for a minter. The lower the mileage the better but must have under 30k and 04 plate onwards. Would pref a Grey one but would consider Black or Silver or possibly green. Must have half leather / half alcantara, hard top in body colour would be nice. :)

Finders fee if anyone points me to one that I end up buying ;)

I'm looking on PH and autotrader so don't bother with there..

Email me any prospects if the mods dont' want me to have them posted here ?

Cheers :)

Pete

Cheers mate will give them a call tomorrow :)

Went down to Church Village motors in Shepperton today to have a nose around and do a bit of research. Spoke to a very nice guy there who gave me loads of info but they only have 135's in at the moment. They had some nice late low mileage ones though but I just know I'd end up regretting not getting a 160.

They do a HG / cambelt replacement though for £650 with the freelander upgraded gasket which was good to know..

Saw one of the LE 500's in the flesh though which was good to see, the finish is really nice especially the piano black console (I can see my first mod already ;) ) and I think the white one would look great especially with black wheels but I couldn't justify £16k for one especially as there not even 160's

The one Ralph has is in a flip paint green/yellow colour, looks fantastic. Alcantara too, it's a bit over budget but its been there a while, I'm sure you could bring it down :p

If you go to have a look at it give me a shout as I'm not far away.

Doesn't have a price but heres a picture of it.
