I'm seriously thinking about this now as an alternative to changing car. My friend has just bought one and it blew me away.

Anyhoo, I'd like the whole lot doing by one company. I'm not interested in doing it myself because I simply don't have the time. It's a 1.6 so I'm going to need bigger brakes and probably some other bits and bobs.

Ecosse Peugeot charge about 1600 quid for the engine transplant, but they were very vague about exactly what this entails when I emailed them. If it's 1600 quid for an engine and fitting and nothing else, I think it's ridiculously steep.

What are my options folks? :)

edit: I should add that my other option is a Porsche 944... Either way I've budgeted the same amount of money. Obviously the Porsche purchase would include the selling price of my 205. And yes, I've looked into insurance and running costs. Perfectly affordable to me.

I've spoken to a couple of people about engine conversions, and the general concensus is to go for a GTi6 engine. much newer, more reliable, and wouldn't need rebuilding. Bear in mind that the 405 Mi16 production stopped in 1992, so the newest engines are 15 years old!

Yeah I noticed that conversion as well. It's even more expensive!

I think in the long run, it works out cheaper. Unless you're very lucky and find a freshly rebuilt engine for a very good price, you're going to have to spend nigh on £1k rebuilding it. Whereas if you find a good, low milage gti-6 lump, you can just drop it straight in, with a change of belts and tensioners.

Yes, the gti6 lump will cost more initially, but it'd work out cheaper iirc.

944 even. Bloody fat thumbs :(

If you've got your heart set on a 16v 205, get one that's been done already as Lewis says. Far, far cheaper.

I thought about a gti-6 conversion for mine but decided to keep it standard, but if that's what you want m8 get yourself on 205gtidrivers.com and you will probably find someone local who will do it for you much cheaper.

Isn't the GTI6 engine a lot heavier though.

its an ally block i think so weight is pretty much the same.. or something like that lol

My cousin was going to Mi his 1600 205.. but decided to change all the bits bringing it upto a 1900 and then adding some carbs.. sure the engine is in bits at the moment.. again.

yeah you're right.. tis the mi thats got the ally block. GTi6 had cast. apparently theres about 20kilos difference in weight?

Right lock is **** in the 306, I'd hate to seeit in a 205  Actually I remember someone fitting a GTi6 lump with the 6 speed box to a 106 and that was down right dangerous iirc. Definately go with the Xsrar 5 speed box if you do :)

I wouldn;t even bother if you're not doing it yourself. It will end up costing £££. But yeah i've been in a GTI-6 205 and they are little pocket rockets.
