Michael Shields to receive Pardon.

In a statement, Mr Straw said that during the last meeting with the Shields family on 28 August "important new evidence came to light".

He was told about a visit by two members of the Shields family to the home of another man alleged to be responsible for the crime.

He said: "I was told that in the course of the visit that man made an oral confession to the crime in front of several other people.

"When looked at alongside all the previously available evidence, (it) has now satisfied me that Mr Shields meets the high test set by the court."

 Haven't we been here before? Didn't someone "confess" to the crime only to retract that confession when it turned out he'd have to go to Bulgaria and potentially face charges.

Britain: Leading the world in letting people out of prison early

Scorza he is an innocent man.

Bloody great news if you ask me, and about time too.

His family house is only up the road from her, it will be full of TV camera vans by now!
His conviction has always been dubious.

From another forum, interesting point:

It may not have been him but playing devils advocat here, I still think there's more to it, he claims to have had an early night, the night he's just seen his club win the champions league after one of the greatest comebacks in football....

It probably wasn't him who did it but bet he knew more than he's letting on!

If he has received a Royal Pardon they must surely be satisfied that he is an innocent man. (which I myself firmly believe he is)

One huge miscarriage of justice here.

Oh they said that he said that he did it, that's ok then, free him :p

If only it was always that easy :D

I'm sure a Pardon does not mean that the person is not guilty. IIRC some prisoners have refused a pardon as it does not prove their innocence.
Bulgaria and justice do not seem to go together very well

About time assuming he is innocent.

Unless you are able to review the evidence then you just have to take jack straws word for it that the new evidence vindicates Mr Shields beyond doubt.

Knowing how jack straw is i assume this evidence is good enough so to keep saying "he did it" etc is a bit lame.

There is obviously more to this story than the media know, but im quite happy that jack straw is sticking to the legal line on this. I dont like the guy ( straw ) personally but hes always been pretty close to the line when it comes to decisions like this.

Good article describing the facts surrounding the case. Based on the facts as presented in that article, I don't have any doubts about his conviction.

Of course, it's always possible that the conviction is wrong, but without knowing who has now confessed it sounds highly dubious, especially given the now discredited previous confession and alibi's for Shields given by other Liverpool fans. I fully expect that the "Justice" campaign will now tell the authorities who has confessed so that they can stand trial in Bulgaria for the horrific injuries inflicted upon the victim.
