Let's see if ANY form of microtransaction would be accepted by the PC community. Multiplayer game. FPS 'arena' shooter.

The publisher is prepared to sell the vanilla game for £27.99 NOT £29.99 if he can implement the following... acceptable?

1) Pay the publisher an extra £2 and you get access to the 'Uber-lazer'. And proceed to have noticeable advantage people without it on the server. Reasonable?

2) Pay the publisher an extra £2 and you get 'funny costume'. Makes no difference to your characters capabilities in game, just makes him look wierd. Reasonable?

3) Pay the publisher an extra £2 and you get to battle on 'Mars pithole' level with anyone else that gave them £2 (and anyone that didn't , er ,, doesn't!). Acceptable?

4) Pay the publisher an extra £2 and they'll unlock game screen resolutions above 1024*768. Don't, and you can play it perfectly well at 1024*768 it's just not quite as pretty. Acceptable?

5) Pay the publisher an extra £2 and they remove 'sleep 30 seconds' from the 'loading' code. So relatively the game seems to load amazingly fast.

Any of the above reasonable, for getting THE OPTION of a cheaper 'vanilla' game?

Having to pay to be better than other people wouldn't be a good idea and would cause problems in the community.

Why would you pay to look stupid and more noticable in an FPS game?

Having to pay for levels wouldn't work. Someone would replicate the level for free and release it.

You have to pay for screen resolutions? Are you even serious on this one?

Someone will just crack the 'sleep 30 seconds' from the 'loading' code and release it.

1 - no
2 - no
3 - yes, provided game is not advertised to have this level and provided custom maps made by community are allowed
4 - no
5 - no

Yeah it would, EA did it with the first BF2 expansion.

If a game has any microtransactions at all, I generally wouldn't touch it with a 10ft cattle prod.

1) no

2) yes

3) depends on weather the level was designed later for a dlc, or was deliberately held back for dlc.

Also depends on weather level modding/map creation by the community is allowed

4) defiantly not
5) absolutly not

the last two would ruin the companies name though as they deliberately sabotage the game until you pay more, the last one especially may have legal implications.

Err, isn't this what pc enthusiasts have been doing for ages to each other, the people throwing more money at it have a better latency (isp), less lag, higher framerate, bigger monitors to notice more on, better mouses, macro keyboards, 5.1 sound to locate your enemies rather than just 2.0, etc...

ironic really that professionals usually play with low res, average size crt monitors and standard headphones ;)
