To cut a long story short, im interested in playing the keyboard, namely synth. But as i'll be starting from scratch, i dont have the faintest idea on what to buy or whats actually a necessity. I've had a few recommendations, namely being the "MicroKORG" as its fairly cheap and stacked with lots of musicical goodness, but, what would you fellow overclockers recommend? Taking into account, my christmas budget (parents, oh how poor students love them) is upwards of about £300-400ish. Also, anybody had any experience with the Electribe EMX-1?

how about a korg kontrol 49, its a midi controller, but can hook it up to VSTs, AUs etc

MicroKorg only has mini keys I believe so may not be ideal if you're looking to learn to play.

The Novation X-Stations are nice pieces of kit. Work extremely well as midi controllers with many of the top DAWs/soft synths supported and has a built in audio interface. Also has a v.good synth on it so you can play without the need to hook up to a computer. 49 key version can be picked up for £350ish

The other problem with the MicrKorg iirc is the lack of velocity sensitive keys, I could be wrong but this would hinder learning to play the keyboard properly:

I know I keep pimping these things but a second hand Yamaha CS1X or 2X would be around the £100 mark and be a controller keyboard and damn fine synth all rolled into one...with knobs on :)

I have no recommendations for a synth as I know jack **** about them these days but this thread brought back some memories of my days in a band where we did Tubeway Army covers, I was the bassist, we had Moog synth. Very primitive by today's standards I would imagine. :D

My friend is a very keen keyboard player and I will ask him later today for a recommendations, he has about 5 of the things and a mini studio.

If I had £400 to spend on a synth Id get a nice midi controller and softsynth software.
I think sweetloaf is on commision from Yamaha :) but he does have a point the cs1x is a nice cheap synth and can act as a midi controller.

You usually see Electribes/Grooveboxes a lot for sale as people get bored of them fast.

When I get round to getting a synth I will probably get the Mudio Axiom 61 and Ableton Live.

i have a microkorg and it's a neat little portable device. However, i wish i had spent a little bit more and got the MS2000b instead.

The problem with the microkorg is its extremely tiny lcd screen, which is limited to certain letters and numbers. Then you have the problem that it only has four control dials. Then you realise you have fat fingers and the keys are tiny. It's frustrating to say the least.

i've had a play on the MS2000 at my friends place and it is a far easier/relatively simpler piece of equipment to use if you want to start - it has numerous dials and the LCD screen can actually display proper text

I think thats the problem..

I'm actually not sure! In simple terms; I want to play electronics (dnb, techno, electro etc). In the easiest / beginner-friendly way possible!
