I was recently bought a microsoft entertainment 7000 keyboard and mouse set. (the mouse is the 8000). I'm having problems with the smoothness of the mouse. The only way i can think to describe it is imagine a laser mouse only works on white surfaces and not on black... well when i watch the cursor on the screen it looks like i'm moving around on a chess board (only with smaller squares). Its not too noticeable in windows, not enough for me to warrant using another mouse, but when i'm using photoshop, editing fine detail is almost impossible. Another place it fails is playing games like Counter Strike Source. It looks like i've got really bad lag. None of these problems happened with a crappy wired mouse i used to test if it was anything other than the new one.

I used 'mouse rate checker' and for the 8000 i'm getting between 280 and 340 Hz and with the wired its 124

I've installed the bundled software and looked through everything I can to find a way to smooth it out but i can't see any options.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Maybe it's a mechanical fault?

Mike.

I'm not using one but i have tried it on different surfaces and i've also tried changing where i have the blue tooth dongle (distances from the mouse) to see if that affected it in any way but nothings worked.

the microsoft lasers are just the worst! i use a 6000 v2 for windows stuff and unless its on a good mouse mat it is unusable. without it it takes me something like 4 or 5 attempts to close a window. If you dont want to use a mat then i'd suggest getting an optical mouse.

Rubbish! Stop posting your opinion as fact! :p

My Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 is awesome and I love it. Spot on accuracy every time!

Ahhhhh no wonder you are having problems. You need to pause the cursor over the "X" in the top right corner of the window and then click the mouse button. It doesn't work every time if you just slam the mouse down. ;)

Genosfear - I put mousemat in quotation marks as I was refering to the surface that you use the mouse on, rather than an actual mousemat. Are you just using the tabletop? Is it a wooden effect type of desk or similar?

That's all very witty Ucof but as I said to the OP, unless he uses a mouse pad then his laser mouse will act as he is describing, just as my one does. Using my mouse on a decent pad changes this and the jerky movement is more or less gone.
In comparison to other laser and optical mice I have, both on and off of a mouse pad, the microsoft mouse is always far less responsive which is why in my opinion the microsoft lasers are rubbish. Perhaps you haven't made any comparisons.
Google "microsoft laser mouse jerky" and you'll see there's loads of folk with the same opinion. Congratulations if you got one that's buttery smooth.

genosfear - The Razer pad is supposed to be good.....quite a few people here using them. I got the Everglide Titan mini as I wanted a smaller one but it also works well for me.

Fair enough sir, apologies if my reply was overly harsh to you :)
*tips hat*

However, in sure if you Google "<insert brand here> laser mouse jerky" you are likely to find plenty of people saying that too. However, it is obviously related to how many people buy each of the mice, and how many of those people then go on to post about it on t'Interwebnetz.

I personally use my mouse on a mousepad, because regardless of how it was before, I wanted it to be more accurate and have more points of reference than the standard black wood I have on the top of the speaker I have as the place I use the mouse on.

If Im honest, I've always found Microsoft hardware really good. I've got a 5+ year old Optical explorer mouse which has followed me to all jobs ihave been at and is still working perfectly. Ive had the original white ergonomic keyboard and still love that. I then got their wireless multimedia ergnomic keyboard and mouse, and I now have the Laser mouse. I've loved everyone of them and have been throughly impressed.
To me, Microsoft computer hardware is like Nokia phones - It'll take something really special to attract me away from them as I love the way they work.

However, each to their own, and I apologise again :)

Cheers for the input.

I'm using it on a piece of white card. The desk is matt white. I've tried it on everything in the house... Black tshirts seem to work best :P

Piece of white card is a big no no.
It is all over too similar for the mouse to work out where it has been in regards to where it was and move the cursor accordingly.

Can you try it on a piece of newspaper for a bit and let us know how you get on please?

No worries mate, I was probably a little quick to jump on your back there:p

Lasers aside i agree that they are good mice, which is why i still use mine. great build quality and all the buttons are in the perfect place for browsing and general windows tasks.

Newspaper is just as bad as everything else.. Tried on different types too

Which paper are you using?
Is it something cheap and crap like the Sun, or is it qood quality like the Times or Independent?

Yeah, the print quality of the Telegraph should be fine.
They print at 120dpi so should be ok.

I really would suggest you use a mousemat though.

1) Use a decent mousemat
2) Check batteries
3) Check connectivity with bluetooth dongle
4) Check for any other interference on your bluetooth connection

I got the same setup with a cheap mousepad and it works great.

If none of the above work RMA it.
