Hi chaps. I hope this doesn't come across as an advertisement but many times on these forums I've seen people ask about 'breaking into IT', finding a job when you're fresh out of school etc. so I thought this was worth posing about.
At the company I work for we've been looking into the Microsoft Britain Works Apprentice Scheme which is a 10 months work and classroom based apprenticeship scheme for 16-18 year-olds (though I'm sure I've seen CVs for people slightly older than this) that gives apprentices that valuable, hard to come by work experience and at the same time, a whole bunch of certifications.
I've now seen a fair few school-leavers and it almost makes me want to quit my job and go and work as a school careers advisor so I can grab the apathetic teenagers by the shoulders and shake them, screaming 'you will care about your future or you'll end up working at Tesco for the rest of your life!'.
So, if you're around that age or leaving school this summer you might want to take a look. We haven't participated in the scheme yet so I can't vouch for how good it is, but if you're interested there's interviews for an intake in the Slough area (general south east, not just Slough) right now and further intakes in other parts of the country later in the year, so get in touch with QA who are organising the programme.
