Microsoft buys linkedin

I think the purchase is a good move. I'm not sure the value is right but time will tell. Nadella is a very bright guy, I'm confident he has a few uses lined up.

MS bought an awful lot of talent and knowledge when they acquired Nokia. A failed mobile phone venture doesn't make the investment worthless, I think Nokia could yet surprise a few people with success in other areas. An accounting write off (which they could easily afford) doesn't necessarily mean a future cash flows write off.

Most of the talent had left Nokia's mobile division by the time that the acquisition completed. Microsoft were always seen as the Big Bad by Nokia employees. The old guard had no intention of working for Microsoft.

Nokia essentially outsourced its redundancy programme when it sold its mobile division.

And before Nokia, there was Danger...

This is absolutely what is happening. Microsoft have been contacting vendors, resellers, consultancy firms (mine included) for months now. They have requested that each player forms relationships with each other. Comms providers recommending licence houses and vice versa. It's all about harmony and streamlining projects around their solutions.

Integrating linkedin with microsoft cloud is a brilliant move. The products launching within the next few months are key to this. Watch this space ;-)

Linkedin is good for connecting with fellow professionals and getting occasional head hunting queries.

Its bad for people requesting a connection with you who have nothing in common with you, in work or otherwise.

I dont understand it, why not make a better competitor which they can for a fraction of a price.

that isn't really how it works... I mean someone like google could build another facebook quite easily but there wouldn't necessarily be much point in them doing so as it would quite likely fail - facebook already exists and they''d probably need to offer something new - so far their forays into social networking haven't exactly been game changing.

Well Microsoft own lots of business software, why not buy business social media and merge the two? I'm sure LinkedIn and sharepoint will become more integrated, plus they'll bring Skype into the mix with additional Exchange functionality. Businesses are about to become more connected (if they want to, that is).
