Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
I have just recently GTA4 off Steam and I am having a few problems with the way the game is running. As the official patches are not installed through Steam, I realised that I had to download them via microsoft 'Games for Windows'. However, this has proved to a mithersome task as when I log onto the appropriate site to set up my gamertag

https://live.xbox.com/en-US/accounts/NoCookies.aspx

I get this message 'Looking for something at Xbox.com?
The page you tried could not be found. You may have used an outdated link or typed the URL incorrectly.'

I have even downloaded the games for windows software and still had no joy going through that way. Is anyone else having this problem???

If you don't mind me saying so, I'm a little confused as to the problem, but if you mean you don't have a Live account, might I suggest:

a) http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/myxbox/myprofile.htm?cid=xboxshellgcard_silver
b) Pressing Home when in GTA4, creating your account from there
c) Using a current Microsoft Passport account (which I think should work, though might well be wrong. MSN or whatever.)

-Having just tried a, it seems you may have to try one of the lower options, unless you have the MS Passport account, in which case try a with that? =) Hope it works for you.

-If you mean you can't patch, then press Home (as in b, above) and log into Windows Live thing. Then it will patch veeeeery veeeeery slowly. =)

I also had similar problems getting set up for the first time on GTAIV through steam as UAC wasn't showing up correctly if i tried to register within Windows Live in game.

This link is to Rockstar Social club, which gives full links to creating a Windows Live account. Pay attention to the bit about not being signed in, it will save a little frustration.

Direct link to sign up for a Windows Live / Passport / MSN / hotmail or whatever is here: https://signup.live.com/

After you have a Windows Live account (I used my hotmail account), you then have to create a Games for Windows Gamertag for it:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=76017

Download and install latest version of games for windows: http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-US/index.aspx (sorry for the US link, there might be a UK version I couldn't find).

Finally create an account on Rockstar Social Club site and link it to your Gamertag: https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/profile/register.html

You can now start GTA IV from steam. You will then be required to log in to the applet using your Social Club id that you linked to your Gamertag.

This annoying and pointless amble around the web will allow you to save games in GTA IV. There might be other features too, they might even be good, but after that process I never EVER want to visit the Social Club ever again...

I got dirst2 for free with new GPU and setting up a GFWL account was a 2hr effort. If you know nothing about GFWL it's very confusing, I tried using my hotmail account but it kept refusing the email address as it said it ended in .com and that was reserved.

Eventually I worked out that I had to download some software, update my PC with a patch and then update to netframework 3.5 which I already had installed.

Then I could use my email address to set up the account and now login using my hotmail account.
What a pathetic system, I now have to have steam and GFWL installed what next.
