Hi, just installed microsoft messenger for my macbook pro, when I click on the messenger icon on the dock it always brings up ad microsoft messenger icon on the desktop and the only option I have to get rid of it is eject once I have quit messenger.
How do I stop it putting the icon on the desktop? other programs don't do this!

Many Thanks
Martin

Certain its installed? Only usually does that if you put the install file (which has the same icon) on the dock instead of the unpacked one

What you've done is drag the app to the dock from the disk image, then ejected the image.

When you click your dock icon, to get to the app, it has to mount the image again - this is what's appearing on your desktop each time.

Open your image and drag the app to the applications folder, then drag THAT to the dock. Bin the old dock icon first - it leads to the image.

Loads of people do this at first, really common. Installing apps on a mac isn't immediately obvious at first :)

I have uninstalled and deleted it all, now I have downloaded it again and clicked on the downloaded file.
I get a window with 2 options a picture of the messenger icon with an arrow to a picture of the applications folder.

What should I click now?

Cheers

Drag the icon to the applications folder. Don't worry, it took me a while to realise this too...

Right, I have done this. dragged it across and opened it from the messenger icon in the applications folder. it appears on the dock but once i have quit it disappears. I then go to find it in the applications folder and there is the button but with a piece of paper and an error sign as the icon

I double click this and messenger loads as it should and the messenger icon reappears in the dock.

So my new problem is getting the messenger icon to stay put!

Drag the piece of paper with the error icon onto the dock. It'll add the messenger icon to the dock. The icon will appear in the applications folder after you restart or install another piece of software. Or there may be another way of getting it to display, but so far I haven't come across it.

If you get rid of the old icon by dragging it to the trash, then open messenger, then option click the running messenger icon in the dock, there's an option to "keep in dock" that's what I used :)

Have they fixed the issue of it spazzing out if you are signed in elsewhere? Adium never had this problem, but with MSN Messenger it would log in, log out, log in and log out over and over. Very annoying!
