Microsoft might be interested in buying AMD, according to source

Why are we having a CPU discussion in the graphics card section?? This needs to be in the CPU section or General Hardware section.

Because it should be a discussion about AMD the company being bought out, but in true OCUK forum fashion its gone off on a bit of a tangent :D:p:D

I suppose at least this particular tangent is still fairly relevant to the original subject unlike what normally happens. ;)

That would be a good thing, allowing Intel to fully capitalize on the Itaniu-64 architecture and we can finally say good buy to X-86.

I'm all for going it Linux but it needs a lot of development work to make it a viable alternative to Windows and IMO that's unlikely to even start happening for a very long time, not before the Linux (everything works to well and is too user friendly these days) club members die-out.

Linux has a church mentality problem, its the last place those who wish it was 1982, who think double click install and run is the devils work retreat to, and they defend Linux in its current state viciously.

They are the Classic Car owners of the PC world.

Not trying to start an argument but what development work? I've used linux for 15 years I really don't see any need for any dev work.

I actually find windows horribly complex and confusing. Windows 8 was pretty much unusable to me. Linux package management and installation is light years ahead of windows.

I don't want to start an argument either.

Windows has its drawbacks.

Put your average user in front of a virgin Windows PC, and give them install rights.

Within a day at most they've probably got a ton of malware and have utterly compromised their machine. I see it all the time.

Utter ********. It would NEVER EVER get through competition authorities.

Please stop re-posting this cack.

It would if they formed a separate company to do it.

EDIT: ALso.. please let's not go down the Linux/Windows route in this thread, let's stick to the MS potentially buying AMD.

Yes, that is true, my Nephew keeps complaining about his slow running PC, i clean it up regularly and eachtime it has over 100 viruses.
But the first thing i'm confronted with is 15 explorer toolbars stacked ontop of each-other, its like browsing the net through a letter box.

I keep telling him not to install everything he sees, but he does it anyway.

yep, thats why I just installed Ubtunu on my parents PC and in general don't worry about these things. I occasionally SSH in when the machine is on and check ti is all OK. would never trust them with windows and would have no clue how to help them with any widows problems.

That's why at work we lock down windows tighter than a nuns nadger, to keep it free from harm, we have our own Wsus servers and deploy everything via sccm so it's all controlled and safe, no interwebz for you!!!

Fantasy M&A however, someone like MS buying AMD may be the only real way to protect investments in things like the XBone and it also fits the M&A profile of what they did with Nokia.

Last thing Microsoft (and Sony) would want is some hedge fund buying up AMD and then breaking it up, forcing deals to be made with venture capitalists and then Intel/Nvidia for the XBone successor.

Microsofts gaming divisions turnover is a third bigger than the whole of AMD's at around $1.5Bn per quarter.

Oracle purchased SUN Microsystems for the same reasons, competition regulator waved it through.

Apple may step in for AMD yet so this rumour mill will keep on churning.
