Microsoft needs to admit the Xbox One Kinect is a peripheral, not a pack-in (warning linkenrun)

Personally I don't see the point of it, as far as games go it serves as nothing more than a gimmick. All those games from last gen that had the "Better with Kinect" stamped on top of the box were usually anything but. Games such as Need for Speed basically shoehorned the Kinect in as a novelty, I can see how it might be cool to be able to walk into a room and say "Xbox On" and it just turns itself on, but you still need to pick up the controller and if the console can boot up that quickly then you may as well just hold the guide button down instead of making yourself look like a tit.

Totally agree with everything said in the article but surprised at the source.

Polygon were the site that reviewed the Xbone as being better than the PS4, much to the delight of the MS fanboys, I wonder what they'll make of this?

I've said multiple times that MS need to drop Kinect and adjust the price accordingly to compete with the PS4. Xbox has some great exclusives, a great controller & LIVE is a great service. They need to get back to basics and concentrate on what has made their previous consoles such a success.

The Kinect is OK. I mostly use it for recording clips or bringing up party chat. But given the choice of Kinect or a console for £100 cheaper I would take the cheaper console.

Kinect is absolutely ****. I literally hate it.

The thing never EVER listens to me. utter crap....

Both my friends with a xbox one's say the same, could be are strong chezzy accents though. Still, its **** and worthless to me.

MS tried to cover all bases with the XBO just like they did with Windows 8. Jack of all trades master of none springs to mind. No surprise there have been so many high profile casualties at MS in recent months and it's also no surprise to see investors question where their priority lies. They really need to decide what products to focus on and who they want to compete with because they can't compete with everything and everyone and continue to be successful.

Do any of you own a Samsung Smart TV with gesture controls or been round a mates house that has them?

I was round at a mates who had just gotten one and within 30 minutes I'd had enough of it constantly popping up on the screen, changing the volume or channels, etc whenever someone got up, or was moving their arms whilst having a conversation, or walking around the room or past the tv. It wasn't even my TV but I found it incredibly annoying.

I bet 99% of people end up turning it off.

This is essentially what kinect is imo, although it is useful for games like just dance, streaming and video chat, etc. It should never of been forced on people or if MS did want to force it on people then they should have bared the cost of doing so (giving it away for free), or they could have simply went down the normal route of selling it as an add on to whoever actually wanted one.

Put it this way the next time I went round to that mates house he had turned it off, I wasn't surprised in the slightest.

I can't see why anyone would have an issue with the idea that MS should release a Kinect-less SKU with a price reduction? Just another option for gamers that won't use kinect, why pay a premium for an add on that you don't want & won't use?

It's nothing like your mates TV, yet again you spout nonsense.

I think Kinect is excellent, the voice and hand control work perfectly, i much prefer using my Xbox over my PS4 because of this, seems so old fashioned now using a controller to select stuff :D

Sigh. Not too bothered about Kinect tbh, however find myself using it more and more to navigate the system, and finally got BF4's kinect (and sensitivity) settings to work pretty well when leaning behind walls (whilst sat down).

It's good, but there's always a thought in my mind that nobody has really cracked it in terms of kinect integration into a "proper" game.

Wait, what? You don't need to pick up the controller to turn the console on, and why would you look like a tit?

He was saying you still need to pick up the controller if you want to actually play something, otherwise what's the piont in just turning it on. Perhaps you'd look like a tit if you just spoke to the xbox to turn it on all the time and didn't actually use it.

Does anyone know if MS have dismissed the rumours yet that a Kinectless SKU is on the way, like they dismissed the no-disc-drive rumour?

Kinect should just be an optional extra. I understand why they included it to make sure everyone had one and to push inclusion of it into future software but I just don't think it's what most people want.

It is useful for children, and for party games with mates on a drunken night in. I got the PS4 camera because it was free in the bundle after selling Killzone and I'm fine with them just making the odd game for it to mess about with.

I can't see the mass gaming market ever taking to gesture based gaming I think it would have happened by now if it was ever going to.

If gaming became 100% gesture based, I'd no longer be a gamer in any way shape or form.

I will consider an Xbox One in about 2 years as a second console when I'm fully done with the PS3 so hopefully by then they allow me to buy the console only - or I'll just buy a 2nd PS4

But you only need the controller if you want to play a game....and then only if that game requires a controller input to play it...

MS are gonna be damned if they do and damned if they dont - tough position they put themselves in. Dont understand why they didnt launch with some Kinect games to at least put some perceived value to Kinect - instead it seems they did the opposite (I believe Ryse was Kinect only originally?)

EDIT: I dont get the mentality of forcing an accessory on the consumer because its your vision, why cant you make the accessory so useful that consumers have to go out and buy it? Why was it the consumers fault if Kinect support lived or died?

ps3ud0

The whole pitch was about the 'One' for one machine to do everything. If they wanted it to do everything then they damn well should've made sure it could do everything when they launched it.

Rushed. Not just MS - both consoles were rushed just to get them out there.
