Hi All,

just purchased a crucial m4 256GB,
attached to sata 2 port on an old 775 maximus formula X38.
Qu 1
on a fresh windows 7 build what driver should i use (default ms or some intel driver).
Qu 2.
What what benchmark tool should i be using and what speeds should i be getting.

thanks

Hi.

The default driver on installation will be Microsoft.

You can install the Intel driver afterwards but it probably won't make much/any difference.

Version 10.8.0.1003 here (the 6.89MB file)

Version: 11.2.0.1006 here (the 12.35MB file)

Don't forget to set the SATA mode to AHCI before installing Windows and disconnect all other storage drives until Windows is installed.

You may find this of use: Sean's Windows 7 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs

Edit:

For benchmarking try AS SSD, ATTO or CrystalDiskMark.

With SATA 2 the maximum speed you'll see will be ~275MB/s.

Hijack....sorry, but it is an appropriate question

I've installed the RSTe drivers for x79 chipset (well it C600 actually...) from
ASUS mobo support page, I think the version is 3.0.0.3011 or something like that? Anyways, installed windows on SSD but I'm in RAID mode so used the F6 driver aswell, I can't get the drivers to be used in windows, the RST icon is ticked in task bar, but I can't use the program either, comes up with a big abort/ignore error (whole page of junk) anyone else had any problems with x79 chips?

well it doesnt get more comprehensive than that. thanks for info.

Think ill stick to standard drivers if there is no realworld benefit.

FWIW i used to think disconnecting other drives was important, because windows would do funny things splitting boot and system roles on other disks..but the last two builds i have not seen this problem.

why do you recommend not having other drives attached?

For exactly the reasons you have said. Drives can be marked as system and it's easy to get it wrong and install windows 7 on the wrong drive.

So safer just to have your new primary drive connected just for a few minutes.
