I didn't find any similar threads, so thought I'd post a bit of news that came in my Google+ today: M$ to stop selling Windows RT and their ARM tablets!

https://plus.google.com/u/0/+Eyeonwindows/posts/LvSC4DzrUrL?cfem=1

I'm guessing they'll be concentrating on Windows 10 now, and they'll keep selling the IA64-based Surface Pro? Still, I think it's a bit of a blow for them, and M$ certainly aren't as dominant as they once were back in the Win 9x / XP days.

That isn't what has been said at all.
They've stopped selling old rt devices.
However they've already confirmed rt will get a w10 update.

Nothing more than speculation from certain media people.
Especially as phones will still be arm, so the software is there.

Although I doubt we will see a surface RT. In favour if cherry trail replacement.

I think they nerfed the RT themselves selling both x64 and ARM at the same scale.

Maybe there's scope for a smaller RT tablet, a competitor to the iPad Mini and Nexus 9 in the ~8" space?

Only the original pro had the same sized screen,(I lied, the Pro 2 also has this size :p) but even then it was full HD compared to the RT's 768p. One of the reasons the surface RT failed was because people (reviewers especially)were too focussed on what WinRT couldn't do and not what it could do. Its meant to be more of a productivity tablet and it does that well when compared to rival offerings, it didn't even need the 'apps' as it had a decent web browser. Tablets like the Asus T100 were the final nail in the coffin I guess as they offered full fat Win8 for a cheaper price.

Despite owning a Surface Pro 3, I'll be on the look out for a bargain Surface 2.

The aspect ratio was good for watching movies.

I read that RT will get an update, but it wont be full blown W10 just some of it's features, only the Surface range will get full blown W10 updates.

Oh god, not this again.
Of course it won't be full blown windows, just like this version isn't full blown windows. Just like windows 10 for phone won't be full blown windows. It's arm, it however it will be windows 10, it just can't run legacy software just like now.

I guess it's time to sell my original 64GB RT with touch cover.

Bought them in US for £160 as a combo, so guess I won't be taking a huge loss if any.

the question is what to replace it with? I only ever used it as a secondary device, but I liked the stand and overall build quality. There's gazillion windows tablets and 2 in 1s, but if you don't spend 100s, they're not that great, right?

Don't sell them and don't replace them, they are getting updated and if they do all you need then why would you get rid off them. Basically ignore the OP, which isn't based on anything real. Other than they have stopped selling them, hardly surprising can't sell tegra 4 for over £200 these days.

I will replace mine and I will miss kickstand massively, but there's some photo software I want to run, so looking at cherry trail atoms when they come out.

Yeah sorry must have missed all the mentions that it WILL be windows 10 and not just some of it's features like everyone is reporting

I was thinking of selling it even without reading OP, but there honestly isn't something worth it out yet (at reasonable price that is) and ones like SP3 are too pricey for what I use it for.

it was always fun to see people with other tablets looking at the kickstand with envy, while having to hold theirs in hands.

Microsoft said it's not getting Windows 10 (As in an ARM version), rather it's getting "some features". By it, I mean the surface ARM tablets (Or in fact, just current ARM tablets)

Your denial of Windows RT is hilarious, it's been one massive failure, that everyone objective predicted.

Our Surface 1's and 2's will be left behind.

Windows 10 ARM will obviously exist, but who's going to release a tablet for it? Microsoft don't seem to care anymore about first party ARM tablets (And who can blame them after their pathetic attempt?)

Decent idea that IMO got destroyed the second Intel released its Atom chips which meant you could get full Win8.1 tablets for the same price as RT tablets.

The XPS 10 I got was hella cheap, came in really useful for working and watching movies on a couple of international flights and now I use it as a cheap n cheerful kitchen tablet so it paid itself off but I upgraded to a V11Pro without much hesitation.

Bit like ChromeOS, WinRT was great right up until you wanted that little useful app or utility, the more of those occurrences you met the more annoying the platform became.

First off... M$? Really, M$? Didn't that joke die around 1999?

Secondly, Itanium based Surface Pro?

Clue, get, a, go. Rearrange where appropriate.

^^
It's a shame the surface 2 is starting to feel sluggish.

So MS have released more details on device specs.

Rt has clearly been rolled into phone and now called windows 10 for mobile. And will be on devices 3.5" up to 7.99" phones and tablets. No desktop, no traditional applications

Windows 10 will be for devices with 7" + so a 1" overlap where OEMs can decide on either platform.

There's also 3 IOT SKUs
Industry devices- full windows 10
Mobile- arm, modern start, no desktop, no traditional apps.
Windows 10 for small devices- where the designer builds an app and the device boots upto that app. No modern start or desktop.

IOT is interesting, wonder if we will get an explosion if automated house products. Rather than the very limited selection we have now,
