Microsoft Security Essentials fails AV-Test certification (again)

To pass certification, the app must score at least 11 out of a possible 18 points across the three tested categories; MSE scored 10 and so just managed to fail the criteria

So if it was 11 instead of 10 we'd all be safe. :p

Best set alight to my PC now then.

MS responded to these tests:

AV-Test reports on samples hit/missed by category. We report (and prioritize our work) based on customer impact.
AV-Test's test results indicate that our products detected 72 percent of all "0-day malware" using a sample size of 100 pieces of malware. We know from telemetry from hundreds of millions of systems around the world that 99.997 percent of our customers hit with any 0-day did not encounter the malware samples tested in this test.
AV-Test's test results indicate that our products missed 9 percent of "recent malware" using a sample size of 216,000 pieces of malware. We know from telemetry that 94 percent of these missed malware samples were never encountered by any of our customers.

It's worth reading the second link to see AV-Tests coments to MS's comments.

Care. The focus shouldn't be on A/V.

Think first, click after. You most likely already come across infected sites or malicious ad banners through your regular browsing but it’s not a reason to click on any links you receive in emails, Facebook or Twitter.

Use your browser wisely: Regular web surfing should have the Java plugin disabled to minimize the infection risk. If for some reason you must use it for a particular site or application, re-enable it as needed or simply use a different browser with Java enabled. There is a tutorial here. Also, if you are logged into your banking website, refrain from opening a dozen other websites in tabs at the same time. Certain sites can load Cross Site Scripting attacks (XSS) and hijack your banking session.

Install the latest version of every software and set settings to automatic update. For Adobe Reader, open a PDF and go to Edit->Preferences->Updater. For Flash go to Control Panel->Advanced. For Java, use this guide.

Backup your data. At the end of the day, you may love your computer but if you really think about it, the stuff that’s on it is actually more valuable. You can always buy a new PC, but you can’t say the same about pictures, work documents, etc…

Hopefully these tips will help to make your computing experience safer because the bad guys are not going to rest any time soon.

Thanks for the RSS....

Artificial tests like this seem designed to spread FUD to keep a multi billion pound anti Virus industry in business. If you look at the MS response the vast majority of the supposed "misses" were for things almost never seen in the real world.

It's like having a headline complain that Anglian Windows double glazing failed 3 different tests on being bullet proof... Ok, and factually correct but does it actually matter?

Nice analogy, Athanor.

I have seen one bit of malware slip past my MSE (and, admittedly, it was from me surfing naughty sites), but was a very small nuisance rather than a big one I might have from the bloatware that is McAfee or Symantec. As posted by KIA, with a little smarts you shouldn't have a problem.

Well, to be fair you don't really expect glass to stop bullets but you do expect antivirus to stop malware samples. The test is legitimate in that regard but the results don't mean very much.

Avast is the only free AV you will ever need, far superior to MSE.

Avast is a good free OS however you'll probably need the patch for Win8,otherwise you get BSOD even with latest Avast version.

Issue

If avast! 7.0.1473 or 7.0.1474 is installed on Windows 8 you may experience a blue screen error (BSOD) in NETIO.SYS or ASWNET.SYS driver.

Details

This is a known bug in avast! 7.0.1473 and avast! 7.0.1474 running on Windows 8. The problem should be fixed with the updated ASWNET.SYS driver.
