Microsoft Starts automatically Pushing Windows 10 to all Windows 7 and 8.1 Users

It looks like MS are starting to be more aggressive in pushing out Windows 10 to all users on Windows 7 and 8.

Instead of it being part of the optional updates, it is moving it to the recommended updates, so If you have enabled Automatic Windows Update on your Window 7, 8 or 8.1 devices, this means Windows 10 upgrade process will download and start on all devices.

Good thing I have auto updates turned off ;)

Been noticing this happening already on some of the work PCs. Annoying when you set everything up for someone in a way where it's easy to find their files, only for 10 to change it :p.

I can't find the internet!

I guess if people leave automatic updates enabled they can't care that much - but bit of a dick move as now people will disable those kind of updates which potentially leaves them insecure.

EDIT: That said its not like Windows Update has even functioned on 7 properly the last couple of times I've tried to use it so I'm fairly safe from a forced update :D

It is a bit of a daft move but to be honest if they're going to start cutting off support for older OS quicker than with XP then they need to sort this out soon. I've moved to Windows 10 at home and honestly I'm pretty damn happy with it (Still have Linux on my laptop). It's fine, I'm not sure how easy it would be to move to in a corporate environment though, I don't think a lot of training would be required - but I do think underlying infrastructure may need to be looked at and of course legacy application compatibility might be a big problem especially if they rely on older browsers (which MS are trying to phase out).

It would be fine if they fully supported all legacy hardware and applications, but they don't, so on this occasion anyone adversely affected by this dick move should fully able to sue Microsoft.

Forcing upgrades on people whether it is free or not is wrong, no doubt about it.

The update isn't forced, you can clearly see that from the screenshot, I'm guessing you didn't even look. It's under the "optional" tab.

It does mean that anyone who's got the "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important update" box ticked will get it automatically - as it's now "recommended".

Still not forcing it though.

No I didn't to be honest. :o

I suppose it is a bit better then.

So some people will be affected, meaning my post is still valid for those people.

Still not forcing it though.

*Yet.

Actions have consequences, if you choose to hand over picking recommended updates from MS, you should expect them to do just that.

As far as I'm concerned MS should simply stick to their EOL schedule for OS support from now on, if people haven't updated - that's their problem, this is how Apple have dealt with people since day one essentially.

W10 absolutely slays old netbooks which were quite happy on W7.

They become unusably slow, even with AV off / services tweaked.

I love W10, but this is a bad move by MS.

My Linx 10 is on Window s10. it has a 30GB drive built in and runs really smooth without problems, boots as quick as my desktop and is generally excellent/ can't fault it really for a tablet with an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM!

Sounds like journalists. HYPE PANIC but it really isn't

Though, I'm not seeing it listed. Unless it is because I always manually check out all the updates to make sure no sneakies are installed... All I get that keeps on coming back is KB3055883 even though it has been hidden numerous times.

They can bugger off, im staying on my Win 7 for now, i'll go to 10 on my time, not theirs, and when theres actually some games out using Dx12.

I never installed those 2x updates before for it, and ive now set my update to check, but let me choose wether to down and install, even though ive never had anything downloaded and installed automatically anway, as the time to do it is set to 3am, when my PCs off. :D

Dell 11z
Acer One 521

These get annihilated by W10, with an SSD and 4GB Ram

My Asus transformer T100 with a quadcore atom and 2gb runs impressivly well on win10, much better than when it was on 8.

You don't need automatic updates turned off to stop this, you only have to set it to download but not install automatically.

It's likely that like it was before, you can't hide the update without certain software (which has already been mentioned).
