Microsoft Surface RT Priced

Just a point/question about all those suggesting the Pro version will be the future. How does Windows 8 deal with security (virii/malicious/unwanted programs?) I'm guessing RT is locked down and as/almost as secure as iOS however the x86 version has exactly the same issues as all windows OS's before? Something to think about when deciding between the pro and the RT version, how much battery will be sacrificed by having to use an AV etc?

That depends how you use it. Metro on either is extremely locked down. There's also a huge number of other security measures in win8, like secure boot amongst others.

I don't know who will win, but it will be who ever has the speed and power usage and at the moment arm seem to be gaining far more speed, than intel is losing power requirements.

I have a Asus TF101 with keyboard dock, Nexus 7 & iPad2 that I use on a regular basis and have tried using the iPad2 & TF101 as laptop replacements with mixed success, they're fine for a bit of email, web browsing, games etc but fall down when it comes to proper work. I've not tried yet but I can see the Surface replacing my laptop when I travel for work.

The Nexus 7 is a completely different form factor and I really like it but use it for totally different things.

I am genuinely impressed with the Surface, it offers an excellent tablet experience in Modern UI and a good work experience (from what I've seen so far) in Desktop mode.

Thanks, one other important question.
If you load music/films on sd card, does that show up in the playlists? If it doesn't that's a big fail.

It has the same limitations as Windows 7 & 8 regarding adding SD cards to Libraries but there is a workaround

Frankly it seems rather bizarre that the workaround is needed but just given it a bash and it worked fine with video.

That's retarded, at least there's a work around and I assume third party apps, cand do what they please and make their own lists.

I hope ms patch this fast. At least there's a work around.

It's a limitation that's been there for quite a while now so I wouldn't hold your breath and on the plus side at least it means that the Photos app won't end up picking up all my Album art like in Android as I have more control over where it looks.

Anyone that got one, how does the screen look.
Moar pictures needed.

I don't have an iPad3 to compare it to but it looks very nice to my untrained eye. No sign of pixels, good viewing angle and very little reflection.

In theory RT should be an improvement over iOS from a security perspective. Apple don't issue regular security updates. I'd expect RT to get updates every month. In Windows RT automatic updates, antivirus and firewall cannot be disabled.

If you don't need the features of Pro then yes RT is the more secure option. But I'd see that as more of a nice benefit of RT than a reason to avoid Pro.

.

Thing is its never really been a limitation before.
We haven't had mobile devices, designed for media that nearly all come with sd cards to extend storage. I was hopping they would fix it know that it is an issue before launch.

Only conciliation is I'm sure other apps will just bypass libraries and make their own list.

It was annoying me back in January when I got a work laptop with an SSD and wanted to leave a SD card plugged in with my music on it. I'm clearly just ahead of the game ;)

You just aren't mass market.
I don't expect niche markets to be catered for. It's nice when they are, but I don't expect it.
Windows tablets have taken the issue out of niche markets and into general population.

I had a watch of the Verge's video review, and i can't say that i was left impressed at the end of it. Load times of applications, sluggishness and the awkwardness of the device were all major negatives.

You might want to read/watch other reviews, that have applied the updates that were released before shipping, but after manufacturing.

Topolsky is, shall we say, not the biggest fan of Microsoft. I wouldn't base my judgement on that review alone.
