I personally cannot wait for the end of the Microsoft IE product line.

ms got owned from free software ie firefox lol
I find it all rather funny that Microsoft is losing to some free software, like Firefox.

and look forward to ur windows 7 lol
Looking forward to seeing Windows 7 <sarcasm>

I think I've translated this post correctly.
I don't know why you'd be looking forward to the end of IE.
It certainly still does the job and very well.
I'm certainly no "dumb user" and I still pick IE over the alternatives.

MS didn't really get "owned" by free software.
IE is a free product too, so it was free software Vs free software.
IE still has the bigger market share.

I'm looking forward to Windows 7.
I've been a big fan of Vista - ran it from beta and only recently moved to the Windows 7 beta as my only OS.
Windows 7 is to me a slightly polished Vista.

lol yeah you got it spot on i`d say

I very much doubt the credibility of the sources to be totally honest. IE is not as bad as some would have you believe and considering the amount of people that use it (70% of the web browsing community?) I don't think MS will drop it quite yet.

I find IE7 very slow so I tend to use firefox most of the time, going back to IE for the odd site that doesn't work and also to print webpages (firefox is pretty poor at printing).

I would be sad to see IE go though, if it weren't for IE we might still be paying for web browsers

Have you tried IE8? It feels much quicker than IE7 so you might like it :)

(No, this is not a dig.)

I read somewhere that the EU something had fined MS for stopping the growth of competitiors, by forcing their software onto users. So people were'nt given free choice and blocking out competitors. So they're holding back on the IE stuff to apply to the standards the EU gave them.

I think they know that it's rather easy for other companies to make web browsers and Firefox is a company solely based on web browsing, where as MS have other things to concentrate on.

We will have to wait and see.

I liked IE with some of it's features I thought it was the best and wouldn't really look into alternatives. But after security fears and more user content I went for Firefox and haven't looked back :D

I tried one of the early betas and i did like it. I've also got it on my windows 7 install, although I haven't used it much yet. You're right though, it is quicker and I will probably use it quite a bit when i buy windows 7 :)

The only issue I have with IE7 is the speed of the Javascript execution which I hear is much better in IE8. MS won't be killing IE all together though. Like has been said, WebKit is an option but that's way off now.

What security fears though? What does Mozilla Firefox actually offer over Internet Explorer 7 / 8 in terms of security?

You can't really compare the security between IE and Firefox because you don't have a clue what vulnerabilities MS find internally or how long it takes them to fix.
On the other hand there's plenty of stats showing how long it takes Mozilla to patch vulnerabilities. But this is a stuck record routine, I've said it before and quoted from Secunia et al.

As for obscurity, if you break IE into IE6 and IE7 and compare to Firefox there isn't much between the three of them in terms of share...

Nothing. Security is not a good argument for persuading people to ditch IE. IE in protected mode is necessarily the most secure browser on Windows.

There are lots of other reasons though. Extensibility and customisability. Dramatically faster JavaScript execution, meaning more responsive web apps. The smart location bar. Standards compliance, and the good karma that comes from not making every web developer's life hell.

Most of those arguments apply to all the alternative web browsers. Even if you dislike Firefox, you still have Opera, Safari and Chrome to choose from. All of them are really good products and in a different league to IE.
