No, but releasing it on only certain platforms will at least help.
Free security software will probably drive some Vista sales.

I agree. They atleast could put it into the OS.
anti competitive EU stuff would block this kinda thing, i would say...

Yeh more than likely but if they do offer it for free then it better be better than avg or avast.
You would hope so given that they know windows and it's weaknesses better than anyone else. Time will tell.
one thing i'd like to see is a 'trusted installer' type setup certificate..
like driver signing, but app signing,
ie..
you can install any app that has been marked as 'trusted' without any extra intervention, could help prevent rogue apps being installed

Could that affect open source development or developments that have to pay or give lengthy time to certification?
