Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate

Vista is a memory Hog. Regardless of it caching stuff to ram, it has a much larger footprint than xp, same as from 98 to xp, its a bigger OS so will use more memory. For example, my 2 gig memory is fine to run Stalker when I boot into XP, when I boot into Vista, apart from the usual un-optimised drivers, there is quite a huge lag when loading the next part of the level. I am off to get an extra gig today!

Sorry to semi-hijack but..why upgrade to Vista? There's no rhyme or reason yet, is there?

i find i've got no reduction in my functionality. Driver support is poor, but fundamentally a few beta drivers here and there doesnt matter. The stuff works at the end of the day

and i get a nice operating system with new features that looks nicer

why not ?

Dunno, I just don't see the point of upgrading just yet.

Aside from the fact that I'd never install a new MS product without a service pack, I just don't get it. The new features? Meh, if I wanted them I'd buy a mac.

Think of that yourself did you?

You obviously missed my point. Other then a few new toys, Vista doesn't yet offer anything over XP, so why people are clambering to upgrade I don't know. Like I said, no one has sold it to me yet.

He wants new features, and on his PC.
Buy a mac, and enjoy far less software than a PC, what joy lol.

Tbh I'm inclined to agree.

I did actually, thanks.

I didn't actually see a point made though - all you said was you don't see any reason to upgrade and then just advised someone to buy a mac instead of buying Vista. Erm ok...?

If you think Vista doesn't offer anything worthwhile over XP, good for you, but just because you don't, doesn't mean others don't too. Its all a matter of opinion.

does any new operating system ever offer anything other than a few new toys

and if your looking at your PC in that kind of utilitarian view, why bother with desktop themes etc..

the people upgrading the vista now are the enthusiasts, the people who like new gadgets and like tinkering with stuff etc..

the people saying "i wont upgrade now because i dont need to" are just PC users and will never understand.

I don't bother with desktop themes. I use my computer for practical purposes that I couldn't do by hand, eg video editing, 3d modelling, web design etc.

I like tinkering with my computer, I always use self builds.

Whats wrong with being just a PC user, or are you trying to rival the mac way of making hardware a trendy lifestyle? As for not understanding, enlighten me, thats why I posted in this thread in the first place!

nothing

just saying that if you look at the PC as a tool rather than a hobby you will never understand the appeal in shiny things like vista :)

In my case, I just ordered a new PC, and I see no reason to go XP when a new operating system is out for almost the same price. XP is just going to get slowly worse from now on, as programs start to be written for Vista, and Direct X 10 games start coming out. Whereas Vista will keep improving. Were I on XP now, I wouldn't upgrade, but as I have the choice of the 2, I'm taking Vista.

I have just 10 minutes ago placed an order for the Retail version of Vista Ultimate, while fundementally i agree, it has not yet proven its worth, i am in little doubt that it will over time and unless you expect reasonable price drop there is little harm in moving now even if its a dual boot.

I actually bought it for a new system, to buy XP to then upgrade in 6 months to a year seems daft. Frankly if all you want is a nice environment for regular desktop use im more inclined to dual boot Linux than to upgrade from XP, doesnt take all that much to setup a linux install anymore, although still a no go for a gaming rig without dual booting.

I dont understand all these fun boys who are praising Vista? Are you all that sad that some 3D alternating task menu is enough to sacrifice your life for?

Its a glassed up XP with yet the almost identical menus moved from A to C insead of B with a media center that is a ball ache to run and seems pointless unless used on say via a television.

Its unstable, an hour ago it just locked up under no load.

All these people who say enjoy a mac with little software.. What software are we talking about? Any software worth running these days is on both platforms and if it isnt then you really are engineered for a PC so dont get involved.
What PC users need to remember when giving glory to Vista is that half its nice looks have been directly copied from OS X.

whats the best firewall/anti-virus combo for vista ultimate?

EDIT : Also when i build the new PC, Can i first install XP on one HDD then vista on the other. Then in the bios could i select which HDD is primary so that OS could start?
