Microsoft Worldwide Telescope

This software is awesome :D

I love how you can find something you want to look at... leave it 2 minutes or so as it collects the data and gets more and more detailed... it's just like a real telescope!

Ah so you leave it at the same spot for a while for it to load? Mine seem very out of focus, will have to read the help files :D

There is a loading/progress bar in the far bottom right corner. Once this reaches 100% it means it has reached full resolution for what it can fit on screen and what you have on screen.

:)

I like the way you can zoom from space right down to your house/street/town (depending on the map resolution in your area). They've seamlessly linked the space data with the maps they have at maps.live.com

Edit: I've just remebered that you can do this in Google Earth too. Meh...

Having not used any of them yet, and feeling incredibly lazy, is anyone up for a brief comparison of Google Sky vs Microsoft Telescope vs Stellarium? (or know of somewhere where one has already been done)

PS - rather than bleat about how Telescope doesn't work on this or that OS, if you want something that does, simply use Stellarium.

Absolutely incredible  It's hard to put into words how insignificant you feel whilst using this. You zoom into a random area and your brain can't truly comprehend the vastness of it all. Just amazing.

Thanks for posting :)

I know, so much out there  Programs like these give you the perspective of how vast space is and how small we are! :D

There is actually a comparison chart on vulnerabilities between Vista and various Linux build, in the first year of life Vista not only had less security risks, but the ones it did have more of them were patched (percent wise) than Linux.

Just want to say that with Linux all security holes are open to scrutiny, with Windows you have to rely on the security flaws Microsoft chooses to disclose. ;)

Stellarium is better imo, you can find out where it is and stick your head out the window to see it in real life. I saw mars the other night with my naked eye :p

Move along please, everyone else has left the petty squabbling behind.

My brain cant comprehend it all when I zoom in as its all blurred and you cant see anything :( Got excited about zooming into the moon and its just a big blur! Even Earth doesnt let you zoom in anywhere near as far as Live.com or google maps does. Lame. Sorry :(

Looks pretty good to me unless you're expecting to zoom in so far you can literally see the dips in craters. That isn't realistic though.

monkeynut, please don't get that started again.

Edit

Just found this
