So our microwave randomly started making a growling noise which I suspect is sparks, thing is nothing has changed???

We thought it was the plate and the bottom showing metal coming through but tried the microwave with nothing in it and it did the same, the noise is very loud and makes you jump and instantly turn the thing off it sounds like it's going to explode.

Any idea what it is and if it's fixable without buying a whole new microwave?

Growl back at it?

If it were me id probably just get a new microwave unless its a really fancy one?

I have no idea though what that noise would be.

It's not a really fancy one, to be fair the pain is coming away inside it, but it's annoying how disposable they are.

Is it worth investing in a fancy microwave?

Unless you make use of some of the features on a fancy one, i'm not sure i'd bother.

But also at the other end of the scale, i wouldn't go too cheap either! The first microwave we bought for the flat was about £40/50. Wasn't even digital, so was hard to gauge the timings correctly. Also being lower powered, everything took considerably longer to cook. We upgraded to a new one when we bought our house for around 110/120, and it's absolutely superb.

I would also recommend flatbed over a turntable. Makes cleaning it an absolute breeze.

That's what I'm thinking a flatbed, seems a Panasonic can be had for 165, can't see any for 120?

Need something reliable and long lasting, this one has barely lasted a year!

Honestly throw it away and grab a new one, it's not worth investing the time or effort. Bottom end Microwave is what £20 with a really quite nice one at a few hundred. With plenty that look like they would do a good job at around £60 it doesn't seem worth the effort which is especially true if you have gone and got yourself a growler.

This one was 50 quid and it's shocking how long it's not lasted.

I have Paypal 0% credit I can use as I begrudge paying for boring uninteresting "white goods", but if it's in the interest of reliability and better performance from heating and cleaning I'd consider something a bit better.

I bought one for about 80 quid two years ago.. it's digital does loads of stuff I never use and still looks like it is new. How much do you use a microwave that it's done in a year?

What microwave have you got?

And we use it maybe once daily.

We have something very similar to this:

To be honest, Id just bought a samsung silver fridge freezer and washing machine and we had this old gammy white cheap microwave that although wasn't a growler was tiny and crap, the mrs liked the look of this and it wasn't all that expensive so it was worth a punt. Having never heard of the brand I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if it blew up for whatever reason.

Swan is a well known brand
Started off I think
With kettles then toasters
And now obviously microwaves
But done kettles for
Donkeys years

i've had a pansonic inverter that cost around £200 for 4 years now. still looks and works like brand new. it's a flatbed so no turntable.

Reckon this would be a good one, but it's expensive.

No buttons, just 2 knobs for power and time, all you need.

Can't stand microwaves with buttons they do my head in.

Girlfriend won't allow this sort of microwave unless I pay for it all myself :( She says it's stupid money for a microwave.

Had a fairly basic Samsung one with the rotating platform for 6-7 years and it’s still going strong, though it’s a busy day if it gets used twice daily now. Used to get hammered when the girls were living at home and I was working silly hours.

Think they’re about the £100 mark.

Probably is. Our microwave is from the 1970s. Still going strong. Probably cost the equivalent of a four figure sum.
I expect it costs twice that to keep it powered, older microwaves are horrendously in effecent.

We sent £60 on one in Asda back before Xmas as the old one had started to peel internally, nothing special but it works and that what matters!
