Hey folks, yep I am being a noob in every sense of the word, but something i've always wondered...

Microwaving more than 1 item, do you do it and if so, do you add more time to it?

Example...

Curry - 7 mins in microwave

Rice - 4 mins in microwave

If you put them both in together, would you just do the same as the packaging says (take rice out 3 mins before curry in the above instance).

Random, but a genuine question!

When you say put them in together would you have them in separate bowls? If so then I see no problem in doing what you suggested.

thing that gets me, if you do the curry for 7 mins, take it out, stick the rice in for 4 mins, by time its finished the curry is cold :( so what i tend to do is do them individually for about 20 secs less than the time shown. then when both are finished, whack them on a plate and stick them in together for 30secs to warm them up :)

I know that if you take two items that take 30 seconds to heat up individually, you need to put them in longer to get the same heat if you do them together.

But not double, that makes it too hot.
I generally guesstimate.

I'd probably cook the curry for 3 minutes on its own first, give it a stir, then put the rice in and do them both for a further 5 mins or so.

A microwave isn't an oven which is just "heat present". So you need to increase your cooking time the greater the mass you wish to bombard with microwaves.

I do because they taste nice.

poor people or single people :) i live on microwave meals (but i fall into both categories :( ) :p or people that work a lot and dont have time to cook full blown meals.

Learning how to cook a decent curry is without doubt one of the best things Ive ever put time into.

Its surprisingly easy actually! just takes about an hour or so depending on what your doing!

Who buys microwave currys??

There's nothing wrong with them, they aren't as nice as a take-away curry and aren't as nice as a home made one, but they are a lot cheaper and take less than 10 minutes to cook. The only rival for speed and price is when you buy the curry in the pot and add your own meat but they aren't that nice imo.

Who buys microwave currys??

I usually get them when they're on offer, fairly cheap and decent-ish meals for when you're getting home late from work or just don't have the energy.

Obviously no match for a proper curry or whatever but as long as you're not buying the basics/value range of "assorted gull in curry-style broth" they can be alright.

Is there an equation to work out how long to put two item in a microwave for?

If both items are the same I've seen this before with hot pockets. 1 takes 5 minutes say but 2 takes 8mins 30s for example. It's not as simple as just doubling the time.

Bold for importance :p
