Microwaving multiple items...

Dont know how people can eat microwaved rice! Takes 15mins to boil some fresh ones.

Wouldnt it just be cheaper getting a single portion of curry/whatever from a decent local?

i dont think it is that simple. You cant just subtract and/or add time. ie Putting two 2 items needing 1 min each doesnt mean you hit 2mins rather than 1min.

Presume that more items will affect the absorption and effectiveness of the microwaves, but in a non-linear fashion.

Bottom line, do each with the time stated, then re-do the ones that have cooled down. Or you will end up with undercooked food and/or carbon.

A home made curry will be far cheaper, per portion, than a microwaved one.

I think this is becoming less true - it's still cheaper of course, but if I try to make a nice lamb curry at home it costs the earth. I think it's because we can't readily get poor quality meat in supermarkets. It's about £12 a kilo for lamb in a supermarket and while it's good stuff that you get, it doesn't make for a cheap curry. My soup is more expensive than tinned soup (although it's miles better), same goes for many things.

All that said... I don't find microwave curries to be all that good, apart from M&S ones which are really quite good indeed.

Unsure how a £1 curry and a £1 rice is cheaper than a takeaway.

I stick stuff in together, and take the weaker item out early.

If both items are the same I just put them in for 1/3 longer.

I just add the time and zap em both! Stirring now and then!

I had a cheapo mwave that only seemed to heat one quarter of a plate. Seriously I would nuke it for a min and its still cold, except a quater-part of the plate. I was gonna get a new mwave anyways so I thought Id test things (lol).

So I put a DVD in there and nuked it for 5 secs. It was pristine when it came out - except for an EXACT 25% "slice" which was burned. And Im talking exact...like what you see in a pie chart!

This doesnt happen on my new mwave which isnt a £25 job like the old one lol.

Learning how to cook a decent curry is without doubt one of the best things Ive ever put time into.

Its surprisingly easy actually! just takes about an hour or so depending on what your doing!

It takes about a minute to microwave an adequate curry. ~45s to get it out the freezer, poke holes in the film and set the microwave, ~15s to get it out afterwards. The intervening ~10mins while it cooks can be used for something more entertaining. I consider that a worthwhile time saving. If you like prepping and cooking, fine. I don't. I'd rather be reading or playing a game.

Microwave ready meals aren't good, but they can be surprisingly adequate nowadays.

Not at all. For example, here's what I had yesterday:

Iceland Chicken Bhuna: £1.50
Pouch of microwaveable pilau rice from B&M: 59p

£2.09 and it's not manky. The rice is the usual, but less half the price because B&M bought an overstock or whatever. The chicken bhuna is not bad despite the price. It's not value bland slurry, that's for sure.

That's a third of the price of chicken bhuna and pilau rice from a takeaway (£6.30 at the randomly chosen one I just looked at).

Even if you buy an expensive frozen curry, it's still cheaper:

Tesco Lamb Rogan Josh indian deli style blah blah: £4
Exactly the same rice as B&M above, but at Tesco: £1.50.

£5.50...same thing from the same takeaway is £6.70

Plus the phone call to order it and the delivery/collection costs and the fact that it will almost certainly take 3-4 times as long o arrive on your plate.
