Mid-air collisions

I think the plane wanted target practice :o If he didnt pull his parachute he would have crashed into it I think. Also does he say "AWW ****"?

He could have avoided it in freefall easy enough, under canopy it would have actually been harder to avoid it. No he doesn't say "awe ****" (I hope because I don't want it removed :p )

There's a lot of optical illusion to be had as well. I was in a holding circle thingie above Heathrow back in July, and as the plane banked to make a turn, I looked out of the window (inner window to the turn) and it looked like there was another large playing flying alongside, very close.

Turns out that we were at exactly the same point in the turn, so vertically almost above each other, but banked at the same angle. Gives the illusion of flying parallel with another plane that was very close. Pilot even explained it all to everyone :)

Planes have warning for collisions and air traffic controllers can see them all on the radar, it is VERY safe.
Nonetheless there have been mid-air collisions, like in that one in europe a few years ago when a plane full of Russian children went down and all were killed.

Plus a lot of near "miss" photographs in paper are down to size difference in planes and are actually 1000's of ft apart. But as there's nothing but sky you cant compare the image to anything else. Making them look close.

Theres absolutely nothing to worry about. I fly for easyJet, and the TCAS draws a nice little picture similar to the radar screen of ATC so we can see where other aircraft are, what altitude they are compared to us, and if they're climbing or descending into us. If a plane does get too close and is predicted to get too close, we have a loud voice telling us to climb or descend. So as long as both pilots arent tucking into the dinner at the same time ignoring the screens, or listening to an ipod lol, everyones safe ;)

Do you have the same dinner?

Did you have the fish?

The only downside to the TCAS display is that some pilots think they have the whole picture from it. I'm sure you hear certain airlines bombard us with querys as to why they're holding or slowing down giving us retorts as "But there's no traffic on TCAS". I'll mention no names, *cough*midland*cough* ;)

EDIT: BTW, do EZY do familiarisation flights for ATCOs?

Yeah, Midland had budget cuts, they replaced all their TCAS displays with the basic models

Your FAR FAR more likely to die on the way to the airport then you ever are on the actual flight your going to take! Not going to go over what Scuzi and 1pudding1 have said, but its all spot on. The airspace in which commercial air traffic fly through is extremely tightly regulated and is monitered by highly trained people (both pilots and ATC!) You have nothing to worry about. Sit back and enjoy the flight!

Hehe, not had any dodgy fish suppers on a flight......yet! Im sure one day.

I can imagine you do get some old school captains who think they know the lot and the complete picture, probabaly forgetting their TCAS can only display a limited number or returns; ours will draw 8 or 9 on ours screens. And no flights for ATCO's as far as I know, but Ive only been flying in the job for just over a month now, so dont quote me on that.

1pudding1, i guess you use Bournemouth airport quite a lot right? Gotta love Hurn, no walking for miles to your gate in that place :D

Gate? Don't you mean portacabin? :p
Hurn is a nice place to fly from although if you're on a passenger flight it's a bit crap.

Oops, guess I should change that. Im now in Bristol, I was in Bournemouth for some training for a couple of months. Was a good place to do CPL from :)

Is there anything to stop collisions happening? like would both pilots have been aware that there was another plane knocking about? I must confess I thought I was a goner for a second lol.

Simple answer
