I'm heading off to uni in a few weeks and I'm bringing my computer with me. I have to fly there, so I can't simply stick it in the back of a car. I think that my LCD will be safe enough to post in a well packaged box, but I'm not sure about posting the base unit (I can just imagine bits getting shaken loose, bouncing around inside the case, etc). That leaves me with the option of bringing it with me on the plane.

I'd like to carry it as hand luggage, since I assume that putting it in the cargo hold would be as risky as posting it. Has anyone done this?

Hmm, not sure I'd want to be there when you try and get something big with lots of circuitry through the x-ray scanners and onto a plane. But do say hi to my cousin at heathrow when he's pointing a gun at you and telling you to lie on the floor.

PK!

Yeah, you'll probably have trouble bringining that through as you won't be able to plug it to an outlet and monitor to show that it works.

When I moved here from Canada with my old computer, it went into cargo. Just make sure you pack it well and it should be alright. Also, if you have any aftermarket coolers, be sure to remove them. In my extreme haste to pack and get everything sorted, I completely forgot and it ripped the socket right out of the board. I then had a large chunk of copper banging around the inside of my case for most of the flight. Other than my stupid mistake, the case was fine.

Right o, looks like the carry-on idea won't work. I'll just stick the case back into the box I got it in, stuff in as much bubble wrap as it can handle and post it through City Link or something.

Open up the PC case and fill it with bubble wrap too, just to be on the safe side. Alternatively, get in touch with your friendly local Columbian druglord and fill it full of plastic bags full of white powder. I'm sure it would be fine.

Just make sure your not going to or from Turkey though, especially not on the midnight express.

;)

Them polisterine wosits are good, just fill the case up inside with them, will keep it all in place, then wrap up well outside and maybe 2x boxs and tons of tape and send it off insured!

I saw some Apple G5 hard flight cases not long ago on the bay
