Midweek Football Thread. Champions League. 15-16 *spoliers*

See Keane didnt get a win still with Ipswich....

Struggling lad

Hehe, I saw them 1-0 and thought there was no way they'd hold on, no idea why they thought he'd be a good idea. Out attacking his players in the press after 2 games wasn't it?

Job done but a dull match tonight. Knew as soon as Fergie went with 1 up front that nothing was going to happen until Berb came on. Why Fergie keeps dropping him I'll never know.

No idea why he drops Berba, I was flicking between matches a lot so didn't get a full view, but Utd seemed hugely better with Berbatov and Owen on, Owen didn't finish one semi decent chance I saw, but his movement was good and helped drag the defence around more, was making runs and getting about which is what you need, but a 2nd striker helps with that also.

I still have no clue how Berba didn't start the CL final, Utd could have done with his hold up play and ability to play in the likes of Rooney/Ronaldo in behind the defence after some great hold up play, he's one of the most useful players in that sense for counterattacking football.

EDIT:- Ronaldo's 2nd freekick goal was hilarious, that keeper is pure crap. He played well though, great header he won/knocked on to Higuan to set up the goal. Diarra again was very very solid, great passing, won loads of the ball, is a safe pass at almost any time as he has that ability to recieve the ball under pressure, not lose it and come out to start an attack with the right pass to the right person. Should never in a million years have sold him, we made what, 4mil or so, hell even if we sold him 6 months later we'd have made an extra 16mil profit, or kept one of the best DM's about and almost certainly the best one under 25 with years and years left at the top of his game.

Anyone see the nice 2 footer by Flamini, looked very painful .

Yeah was absolutely horrible, no idea how nobody got seriously injured, both players slid in with both sets of studs showing, two reds in my opinion, or at least one for Flamster. Even though it was nasty to see, I still miss him and think him and Hleb are exactly what this team needs :(.

Back from a 1-3 defeat to Middlesborough ;)

I take back what I said before, about them been boring.

The game, was ****ing great football for 90 odd minutes, even though we lost, I enjoyed it. Good atmosphere, Wednesdayites > 'Boro lot were singing at each other all night.

We played good football, should have scored 2-3 first half easily, they were good and could have had 1 or 2, we went in 1-1 at half time. Second half, basically two defensive mistakes cost us 2 goals, still a half full off good fast attacking football from both sides.

'Boro were the much better side second half, us probably just in the first. 'boro are a really good side, fast, strong, clever and have a gifted player in A, Johnson.

Anyway, not that anyone in here cares with it not been the Champions League. Good win for United, despite the performance, same goes for Chelsea, I'm informed neither side played well, nor were they good games but the results were good.

Can't wait for Inter tomorrow night, and then Friday, biggest game of the season / footballing world so far ;)

Excellent result for United. Did what they had to do, although admittedly it wasn't pretty or a great performance, but 3 points from the first away game of the CL is a fantastic result regardless of opposition. Especially over in Turkey, credit to the crowd though they were fantastic!

Also, certain Cristiano Ronaldo got ever so slightly lucky with his second goal, what a howler that was

The Inter - Barca game should be a cracker tomorrow!

No Almunia for Arsenal, with Vito Mannone to come in. I shouldn't worry about Liege, but then they gave 'Pool a run for their money last year so perhaps I do.

However not so fussed about the group stages. Win half your games and you're through tbh.

Wouldn't suprise me if Almunia had actually been dropped for this one, chest infection my bum :p

Would rather see Szczesny start than Mannone. Mannone is a bit too much like Almunia for my liking, Szczesny is a real prospect.

Almunia's been miles away from "good" so far this season but willing to hope it was just a poor few games, all keepers have a bad game now and then, some will have a couple bad games together.

If he isn't really sick I'd prefer to see him played in the hope of getting his confidence/form back against weaker opposition than he'll see in the prem league.

Trying to recall all of preseason I'm fairly sure it was Szczesny that looked much better than Mannone, but then quality of opposition changes so drastically throughout preseason its hard to compare.

We've had Mannone a while though haven't we? Which means, considering new stupid home grown players rules we might be looking to give him some experience so he's at least usable as a "home grown" sub to fill out the squad as much as possible.

The bigger issues for tonight seems to be lack of fit players, RVP's out, Denilson's out, Eduardo being back is useful but rather than play left wing instead of Diaby, who was again woeful against City defensively and offensively, he'll probably be upfront, Diaby, Fab, Song in the middle with Ramsey/Wilshire given a chance on the wing? Really praying we start Rosicky instead of Diaby but unlikely to happen given Wengers remarks on protecting Rosicky and not rushing him back, maybe another short sub appearance. Still can't see too much of a problem, but next league game might prove problematic.

One reason why I wont think we will win the World Cup is because of Rooneys antics, I know he wants to win all the time but you have to have composer, players and the crowd will wind him up, looked what happened to Zindane in the World Cup final.

Agree with DM in saying that Diaby has been woeful of late, he had that good game where he scored 2 and ever since it's just been dire from him. Rosicky can make a huge difference in games and now that he's fit let's play him instead of wrapping him up in cotton wool. He's there to be used, so let's use him, he's got one powerful shot that's for sure, I'd put his shooting to somewhere just under Arshavin.

Almunia could have been dropped if Fabiański was fit, no chance with only Mannone and Szczesny fit.

Mannone is woeful.:eek::(
