Just came back from the docs, cos for the last few years, I have always got really tired and rubbishy feeling even if I went to college, or stayed in etc etc and recently its been getting worse, like on sunday I was at work and suddenly became really shaky, tired, nauseous and faint, after a coke i was fine. And this whole week iv pretty much stayed in but felt like Iv had a hang over all day untill I have a meal...then im fine! I stopped drinking for a month to see if I got any better and had no improvements! I also had a few other symptoms that sounded like diabetes so thats why I went to the docs.

I have a blood test for next wednesday, I am scared I think although the thought of having it hasnt sunk in, i was expecting to be told that!

Is anyone here diabetic? And does it affect your life much?

I'm personally not but i know a lot of people who are. It doesn't really effect them in a bad way as long as your careful you can live perfectly normally :)

some are born that way, some are cause by bad diet, some get it at old age.

You say bad diet, i point out i don't know anything about the subject and so this question may appear stupid but would it matter if you had a LOT of sugar intake?

I think thats something weird about if i did have it, cos it doesnt run in my family, Im a healthy weight for my height, and I eat reasonably well!
I just get really tired and ill for no reason and then am fine if i have something to eat. Although like yesterday I felt like I had no energy at all!

Admitedly though I do have a sweet tooth! But I dont go overboard!

I'm diabetic, it's not that bad.

If it's type 1 diabetes then you'll need insulin injections. Type 1 is what I have. It doesn't affect my life too much, I just have to make sure I carry around sugar supplies (in the form of sweets) and my injection if I'm going to be out for a long time.

If it's type 2 diabetes then you'll just need to control your diet. Better hope it's this one if you're scared of needles ;)

Obviously it can be irritating to have to think of food and injections if I just want to go out and get drunk or something, but it's not the end of the world :)

My dads an insulin dependant diabetic. He didnt become one until quite late in life. It can be brought on by other illnesses or perhaps stress, as said its NOT heriditary.

He has to take multiple blood tests and injections, although in recent years they have become easier with certain improvements such as the pen injection system and the digital blood testing meter. :)

If you are a reasonably organised & self-disciplined person then i dont think it will affect your lifestyle immensly, dont worry! :)

you are right about that i some respects BUT . .

injecting upto 4 times a day can be irritating( u gotta do it)

type 2 = tablets and they have some very annoying side effects

the main advice i give is this . . .

ensure that u adhere to all guidelines set by diebetes guides and doctors/consultants advice.

downisdes/side effects for type 1 are actually quite harsh, but again i wont go into them.

u could be hypogylcemic, similar effects but eating sweet goodsis required

My mum and uncle are both diabetic, mum from birth and uncle from about 14 i think. Hasn't really affected them at all, its not a disease you dont have 'x' months to live or any crap like that, you just got to whack in some insulin now and again.

It really doesnt affect my mum/uncle at all, especially now the techonologies working a lot better, fewer injections and less stuff to carry round helps.

Ofcourse if you are afraid of needles, then it would be pretty tough but i believe they've made some sort of funky inhaler now

yeah so, its NOT a disease thats gonna mes up your life, it doesnt disrupt your life really at all and its NOT like "omg you have diabetes you must obese!!!11".

Yep I am diabetic. Was discovered in November 2004 and its not really affected me life at all. I have type 2, they tried to see if diet alone would help but it wasn't to be so am on tablets now. The 2 tablets I take do have side affects though, one is weight gain and unfortunetly the other can cause the runs :( . Also you will have to take a measurement of the glucose in your blood stream with a little test kit, its very easy to do. Diet is still a thing i watch though, but had conflicting advice to start with as was told to cut out all sugary foods etc. Then swaped doctors and she said i can have what i like but to obviously not go silly like having a big choclate cake every day etc.

So don't worry too much mate as long as you manage it well u'll be fine, I even remember reading that they have/are developing a cure for type 1 diabetics. I think they were still in the testing phase.

Yeah I think an islet or full pancreas transplant has been completed successfully. However, anti-rejection drugs have pretty huge side affects so its not a viable option yet for most people.

Anyway, dont worry about it mate, just go to the doctors with an open mind you dont know what it is yet. :)

Both my Dad and Brother-in-law are diabetic. My Dad is type 2 because he use to eat a lot of crap, but now that's under control because of his diet and tablets. My Brother-in-law is type 1 and has to inject himself on a regular basis.

It doesn't really affect their lives that much. As long as you look after yourself and have regular check ups then it will just become part of your life. Hopefully you're not diabetic though.

Hiya hun, diabetes isn't a disease its a condition that you live with.

Im type II tablet controlled and I live a perfectly normal life. When I first found out, it was a huge shock to the system as I had been used to eating chocolate on a daily basisi (5 bars) and pretty much all the junk and rubbish you could find in the sweet isle. After a few months I settled down and my blood sugars were perfectly normal on the tablets I am taking so no need to change to Insulin.

There has been now appreciable difference in my life and I've had it nigh on 10 years now. It seems like a big wake up call at the time, but it is one of those things. I got late onset because I was obese, so I was due to get it anyway.

The first thing I noticed was a nasty thirst/pee cycle of 3 pints, then straight to toilet, another three and this would go on all day. Then as you say, tiredness and inability to concentrate.

You can buy blood glucose monitoring equipment from any chemist quite cheaply, normal figures should be below 10. Anything above 20 is pretty conclusive and 30+ means get to hospital or faulty meter.

Its ok Luckily Im not frightened of needles!!! I think id only have the weaker diabetes, I doubt it would be too serious, well hopefully not! Carrying sweets on me wouldnt be a problem, although I have trouble trying to keep my weight at a steady weight so hopefully I wouldnt gain weight from medication.*
One thing that affects me a lot atm though is peeing a lot, especially at work (i work in a pub) i always worry they get annoyed at me cos i go about 4 times a shift (6 hours) but hopefully if i am diagnosed with it they will understand it more. Peeing a lot can get embarrasing too i went out for a drink with someone the other night and had to go about three times in an hour!

*Im only ten stone and 5'5 so not having trouble with my weigh, jst fluctuates a lot!
