Might be getting a 2nd graphics card. Unsure if it is worth it, no experience with SLI/Crossfire.

It would seem the next step then would be to upgrade my motherboard instead. I have had that for over 3 years now. Future-proofing and all that. From the general views here, I will not bother with a 2nd card. Too much money and there isn't enough of a consensus to say it would be a worthy purchase.

Unless you're planning to change your cpu or add another card, then upgrading your board is a waste of money.
Upgrade it when you need to :) Right now, I'd say to get a decent clock on your cpu and *maybe* think about getting a more powerful single card at some point if you think it's necessary.

Sell the 280 and put the money in the pot for a GTX 970 or AMD 290X this way you will get the increase you want without the crossfire/SLI issues.

Though there are no where near as many issues as before with multiple GPU's, this is the way to go in this situation.

Upgrading just the motherboard wont see you any performance increase in games and will only be advantageous if you are lacking certain features like sata3 and such. I would wait until you upgrade the CPU to do the motherboard aswell. Your set up is still pretty decent if you hooked it up with a mighty card like the 290 or 970.
