Might be moving to Slaithwaite, how can I check latency?

As in title really, I might be moving up north with the other half, and she likes the idea of this little place near huddersfield, but I want to find out whether it would effectively end my online gaming (I play mainly fps) or if it would be alright. I can check line speed for the area, which is estimated at 7-17Mbps, which I could accept, but have no idea what the network latency would be like.

Any ideas how I could check roughly?

The latency is pretty much dependent on the ISP and local congestion, so you won't really know until you try. I can't think it will be too bad if the line speed is going to be 7mbit odd, long as the ISP isn't overloaded. Go for an LLU provider like Sky on the new exchange, best checking on Samknows.

Latency is impossible to tell until you actually move in and provision broadband on the line with a provide then test pinging a good server, its not like "possible" sync speeds your line could "potentially" handle, which you can half predict based on BT checkers, but even that is not 100% accurate.

ah right, so all I really need to worry about is a semi-decent down/up-stream and hope the exchange isn't oversubscribed in the area then?
