Might get a raptor.... Need advise!

I am thinking of purchasing a raptor drive. Does a raptor drive speed up game play?

No, or at least not noticeably. It does, however, increase loading times into new maps/levels.

Would windows run faster on a raptor?

As above. Loading times are reduced.

You are essentially paying to access your software quicker. Once loaded into the RAM you're reliant on your cpu/memory/gpu/connection speed.

Good investment imho.

You can certainly feel the difference in windows and in game loading times. Generally, things seem a lot snappier and in all honesty, you have to experience to know the difference. Some lambast others who buy one, but they clearly have never used one.

I put a raptor 150 in my rig last week. I am very impressed with the overall speed increase of my system. Boot up times are much quicker. Games take far less time to load. I am always first to spawn in BF2!

I would however say that they are fairly loud in operation but don't let that put you off.

I put a 74gb raptor in my system back in Nov 2005 and its one of the best pieces of hardware I have ever brought, its so fast as doing things like installing games or unzipping large files. I remember when the BF1942 mod Forgotten Hope v0.7 game out and as soon as the password was released it was time to unzip a 2.1 GB file and I had unzipped it atleast 3 minutes before my mates on TS had :D

My 36GB raptor gave me a very noticeable speed boost in virtually everything. Well worth it, i might get another one :D

The noise isn't that bad, my seagate is louder than it :o

I am actually very tempted!
I have only ever connected a IDE harddrive. Is it hard installing a sata drive or is it just as easy?
I find it harder, mainly because on my mobo i have to install extra drivers to get it to work in windows. I'm not too sure about your mobo but most mobos require that you install extra drivers. I think the sata controller that requires this is Sillicon Image.

Last year I upgraded from a single 40 gigabyte IDE drive at 7,200 rpm to a RAID-0 2x74gig Raptors.

First thoughts were on the speed it completed a full format, the amount of time it took to install windows, how fast windows loaded, how little time it took to defrag after adding a large amount of file during some time of having the drives; and the reduced time it took to dump the ram into the hard drive during hibernation.

These drives are extremely fast from what I previously had.

I have 2 x 74GB raptors, had them in RAID0 for 1 year, very good for working with large file.

Have them now as 2 single HDDs and still very pleased, I also echo what others have said in faovur of them above.

If you do have to install drivers to get it running, that is not a difficult task. ;)

I've just recently bought a 150gb Raptor using a 74gb as a secondary device & gone from 1gb to 2gb of ram, loading maps on EverQuest is usually about 3 seconds, compared to previously taking upto 15-20 seconds using a 40gb maxtor.

Dont let people put you off about the noise, you only notice it when you first use them & generally get used to it, it isnt something that annoys me anyway.

I just got my 150gb raptor last night and installed xp etc.

is a nice speed boost from my SpinPoint, and I can also attest that from going from pretty much the quietest drive to the raptor I hardly notice, so dont worry about that.

is very nice :D
