So i have an MG ZR 105 2003/03 with:
Alpine CD/MP3 HU
Alloys, PAS, CL, FSH, only 15k miles, boot spoiler, half leather, in metallic grey.

The insurance runs out in June and I fancy a new car at the same time, It needs to be fast / faster than the ZR ( <10s 0-60), reliable, cheapish to run (diesel perhaps) for whatever I can get for my ZR - guessing around £5000 + a few £100.

I really fancy a Mk3 Clio 172 but the insurance will probably be a bit too much :D (i'm 20, 1 NCB) and I dont really want to spend more than £1500 on insurance (paying £1700 atm FC). Something unusual would be nice too but it would have to have 4 seats so I can cart uni stuff and mates around. What are old Jags, MG Midgets, and older 3series' etc. like? Fuel consumption isn't too important as I only do about 4k a year.

any ideas?

cheers
Andy

MGs are......

<refuses to start a Triumph/MG war>

Old Jags - well, an XJ6, either a 2.9 or 3.2 manuals, they both make exceedingly sweet cars and can be had from 150 quid upwards (had one, albeit briefly, was 200 with T&T, nice motor) and can be made to look VERY nice with some alloys & little bits of detailing.

Not a great photo..but ah well.

A BMW 325i is a stunning car and possibly one of the best drivers cars out there. Very tail happy but progressive and really, really do go like a train - they just flat out haul!

Or, as an alternative you could consider something like a Triumph 2500/S/or PI (although to be honest, I'd go with the carbs if you want to use it daily, still, you can get obscene power out of carb'd ones and the engine sound like nothing else - imagine a BMW straight six, modern one, on steriods and you're close). The 2.5's are built tough, but can suffer, as with all older cars, from rust - so worth checking thoroughly.

Triumph 2500

You could also consider it's smaller brother - the Dolomite. Lighter on fuel, faster, better handling but a bit smaller on the interior side. Both are very comfortable and reliable.

Dolomite Sprint

You could have any of these easily in budget, and insure it (although the 325 might be a fight, old Jags are cheap as hell to insure, the others cheaper still).....but I think it might be worth investigating the 2500/Dolomite option. Certainly, the 2500s are lovely cars.

Any questions just shout!

You should be able to get about £5k for that, assuming it's the + model (looks like it from the spec listed). You might even get a bit more as it's low mileage and they seem to be holding their value!

You could always get an MGZR 1.8 120+ - 8.6 sec to 60. £5k would by you an immaculate 52 plate + spec model with about 30-35,000 miles

Your insurance seems really over the top though - I'm paying £970 Fully Comp on a 10 month policy with Admiral for my ZR 1.8. I'm 21 with 0 NCB and two fault claims in the last five years

Not sure if it's the + model, its got leather steering wheel, leather gearknob, half leather seats, but no elec windows or sunroof so I dunno!

Only payed £4500 for it so will be well happy with £5000 or maybe more!

Insurance does seem expensive considering its only group 8, i'm with Elephant which was slightly cheaper than Admiral. Hopefully it should drop quite a bit once I get 1 years no claims

it aint the + model as it has no elec windows or sunroof so ya looking at getting less..

get yaself on autotrader and have alook for simular cars.. see how much they are selling for. :)

How about a golf?
Might be able to stretch to a mk4 1.8T? Or a mk3 vr6, or a smart mk2 16v (with £3000 to spare of improvements).

I'd ask about £5k and accept a little less. That dealer looks very pricey

What Car says £4,970 dealer and £4,220 privately but you should more than this from what I've seen when I bought mine. What Car's valuations are sometimes lower than what people ask - for example, What Car valued my Astra at £1900 dealer, but most private sales were at £2200! (link to valuation) People like low mileage cars so I'd make a point of the mileage!

MG RV8,..... <shudders> You'll never find one in budget, mind, they have quite a following.

P6B ain't a bad idea, you could also look at P5Bs. Neither is particularly fast or engaging to drive however, unless you plough a bit into it. Good engine note mind, even as standard, even if it has no idea what 'revs' are :D

Cheap P6's are never a good idea mind.....you soon find yourself with a pile of red oxide (spent a fair bit of last year digging around them trying to find a nice one). Pay at least a few grand :)

I'm a 21 year old student, with 2 years NCB and decided to buy me an old jag.

Do not get the 2.9, its a dog, with only 165bhp in a car that heavy is not good. The best buys are 1990-1994 3.2's and 4.0's.

The car's aren't uncommon, but they definitely win on the unusual factor for a 21 year old student.

I insure mine for a silly cheap £301 (TPFT with a car owning "partner"). I found the RAC and NU best for the insurance. Mine is a 3.2 litre, its the base model but with leather, and has alloys from a later model. Its not stupid fast, 0-60 around 9 seconds, but the acceleration is so undramatic and relaxing, and it really does pull like a train at higher speeds.

I regret not buying a higher specced model, cruise, leccy seats and air-con would've been nice, but the seller told me it had air-con, but he was a bit of a crook... and i would not recommend him to anyone. But thats another story and at least it has electric windows all round, electric mirrors and trip computer.

The electric aerial has given up on me, i've had to wire in a starter button, and the boot ocassionally doesn't unlock from the central locking. But other than that, no problems. I should've waited and looked at more, but this was down the road from me, and cost just £700 with Full MOT and 5 months Tax.

Sounds like a bargain to me unless you've had to spend a lot since. How many miles did that have.

I think I'd opt for a lpg converted beast if I was going that way

2k for a 1993 Jaguar XJ6 3.2S
5 speed Manual (122k) on that site

You'd make your money back in savings fairly quickly

My car has 119k, the bodywork is in good nick, as is the leather and chrome.

mmm... That car you suggested does look good, i'd definitely consider LPG, but wasn't sure if the car was really for me at the time i bought mine.. so didn't want to spend over 1k. My current plan is to keep it over the summer, take it on the student gumball rally in september, and (assuming it survives), sell it on afterwards, and picking up another one thats a higher spec (possibly with LPG) in January when prices are dirt cheap.

to the OP: for jaguar info... check out www.jag-lovers.org

I bet it cruises through that rally no problem, thats what they were built for after all and that milage is nothing if its all maintained :)
Fuel costs on the other hand  :D

I think Fox should buy that v12 Beemer :)
