My old NASbox died a death, and I went and bought a new one (different, newer 4 bay model).

All of Synology's guides, are based on having a working source box. 2 of my drives are raided (synology's hybrid raid), as they contain all my backup photos / personal important stuff.

Can anyone tell me how I would go about migrating the disks over to the new model. If I just put them in, I'm assuming the new nasbox will just want to format them? Any advice welcomed!

Raid is for redundancy rather than backup. E.g. if a drive fails you still have access to all your data until you replace the drive.

You should still have a full backup of all your data, more than one if possible.

I've just done this (DS214 - > 414) very successfully. I followed the tutorial on this page:

https://www.synology.com/en-uk/knowledgebase/tutorials/651

My DS214 was still working but the only things I did on there were bringing DSM up to date and backing up the configuration. In a pinch I reckon you could do without both of these, if you're prepared to redo some configuration manually on the new box. All of the data was in place and available before I restored the configuration.

Give me a shout if you have any more questions, as it's all still fresh in my mind (did it Sunday) :)

Thanks Arty, much appreciated. I don't really care for any of the configuration, just want my files there.
