Migrating from OLD to new.....er

that's a pretty low price, that must be in the range of a P35 chipset? I haven't had much success with overclocking despite having the hardware to do it previously, so probably wont do it in future

on the basis that I will be running the E4400 on lets say a P45 motherboard with FSB capability of up to 1600Mhz.

The CPU seems to run at 800mhz FSB so does that mean the ram should match the 800, or should it go higher?

I notice OCUK are doing a bundle with this processor but they are punting 1 X Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel with the MB and processor.

E5200 + 4Gb fast DDR2 and a Decent P45 mobo will have you at close to 4Ghz.

Hi Bradley,

Do you mean E4400 as that's what I intend to get initially. Either way the 4400 and 5200 seem very similar. Can you recommend which 'fast DDR2' would be the way to go?

Presuming you mean PC2-6400 or do you mean the 1066mhz ram

Cheers

Somethin like this should hit 4Ghz with a decent cooler.

As far as I know you cannot PM on OCUK, however you can email each other through trust.

The E4400 isn't a bad CPU especially as d brennen is giving it to you for nothing. Any board will run it, but remember to buy some RAM as well and a new Graphics card if your current one isn't PCI-Express. Some cheape options for those are:

Motherboard: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-114-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=326 £40
Memory: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=8&subid=817 £40
Graphics Card: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-197-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=356 £46

Total = £146

Not the best things ever, but should give you a good price:performance boost over what you have now, assuming you'll need a PCI-E graphics card of course. :)

Thanks for the recommendations. You are right ofcourse, I have already said it privately to d brennan, but I will say it publicly, what a fantastic gesture, the guy doesn't know me from adam but rather than either having a cpu doing nothing or trying to make a few quid on ebay he has gifted it to me.

Fair play to you sir, I intend to pass on my old motherboard, CPU and AC Cooler to a mate for nowt, as his system is positively prehistoric but he will also see a good speed boost. One good turn deserves another.

Have a loook in the mobo section as theres a P35 board there for £55 and in the memory section under clearance lines theres some 2gb PC8500 DDR2 kits for £18 and as youre not gaming theres a GF 6200 in the GFX card section for £20

So thats £95 and you got yourself a decent rig, you can always get a better GFX card at a later date.

Thanks for that. I have managed to get hold of an Asus P5Q-SE board which looks to be the one with the least amount of features and also compared to some other boards the chipset cooling is basic too. That said it cost £65 delivered and it is still the same M/B as the £150 versions just without the knobs and whistles. This will fit the processor nicely.

On that score, when more funds become available what would be a worthy chip to keep this board running. I was thinking of a Q6700 or by the time I buy a Q9550

got word today that I passed all my exams, doing a BA in Human Resources which I now have. Also, I needed to pass to get Chartered Institute of Personnel status which is now just a case of requesting this is put in place.

No more money at work but better opportunities.....YEHEY

Anyway, the above information might be boring for some but the upshot was that my other half bought me a gift to say well done for passing.

You could have blowed me down with a feather, I am the proud owner of a Q9550 CPU!!

Now, that really is a special gift. :)

The stock cooler looks pants, so I would be interested in an upgrade. In my old PC I have the Artic cooler Freezer 64 as I demand a quiet CPU but I need enough cooling to try to overclock a wee bit.

According to what I read it would be a shame to leave it at stock, but it needs more air, but I need low noise

Fun and games this weekend for me
