Migrating to AOL

I signed up with Ace-internet a month ago because they have a truly unlimited package. I dont use the internet that much but occasionally download the odd torrent. Anyway, they have started throttling the service gib time! You only get good speeds after 11pm. 6am its all bad again.

I want to migrate to AOL as they are unlimited. Apparently I can migrate to them in 10 days. If I get the mac code from ace internet and go ahead with my order will I lose my current connection to ace-internet straight away or will it switch over on the 10th day. I cant be without internet as i use it for business. If its just a case of it switching over then i'm def going to migrate to AOL

Somewhere in the middle. You'll most probably find you'll be able to change over to the winning ISP before the losing one stops working.

I cant be without internet as i use it for business.

In which case migrating to AOL might not be the best idea.

Why would migrating to AOL not be a good idea? Are they know for taking a long time for migrations?

Where do I begin? The most annoying part of AOL is that they clog up your computer with loads of useless software that just slows your internet connection, at least from my experiences with them. I have known a fair few people who have managed to get away with not installing any of the software

I highly recomend Telewest. Been with them for years. Very little downtime, nice fast connection (even when shared with 5 pc's) and it seems that every year we get a free upgrade! W00T!!!

unfortunately it requires an engineer drilling more holes in your house

Also Tiscali have improved their service DRASTICALLY over the last 18 months or so and are now a very reasonable ISP. Eclipse is another good choice.

I would only use AOL as a very last resort, but hey, each man to his own.

hmmm sorry to be a lil OTT but they are throtterling all p2p at mo especially during office hours so your odd torrent shouldnt be a problem given a little time (of course if as they say restrictions will be lifted then no prob at all) and they arent throtterling any web based stuff (although some stuff has appeared slow at times) so business usage isnt affected so wouldnt it be better to wait a week and see what happens instead of a panic migration ?

of course its your freedom of choice & i do feel like doing the same but one week wont make that much diff to me personally

If i wait another week then i'll have to pay for another month on ace internet. Thats the only reason i'm in a rush.

fair point although you might end up paying it anyway depending on how fast things go

ive always had fairly quick migrations but saying that my move to Ace took 5 days (working) plus the weekend which they dont count by BT who do the actually moving ... so if you ordered a migration this evening .... tomorrow may get classed as day 1 and Monday would count as day 2 ...

hope it all goes well for you whatever your decision .. i only paid second months payment a week ago so i have a bit of time on my side

Just migrated over to AOL myself from Tiscali, had no downtime at all, and they are totally 100% unlimted, you just continue using ACE till your switched, you'll know you've been switched as you wont be able to logon to ACE anymore, so you just logon to AOL instead, thats all i done, i came in one day turned my PC on went to logon as per usual, got the old unknown username password etc... so i said ahh ive been switched, so i just logged onto AOL instead and voila i was on.

Agreed with the above, im not using their software here, just use Draegers guide from my thread here to set up your own connection, works a treat.

Tiscali improved rofl, they started traffic shaping a month ago, you can only get about 5k a sec down on p2p, doesnt matter if your on 2mb either as thats all theyll let you have, and thats off peak hrs as well, only time you can use it for your full speeds is from 1am till about 8am when they stop the shaping, thats why i migrated from em, they are a ******* joke.

They even give you FUP warnings for browsing to much during peak hrs, get 3 of those and you get put on the bad boy pipe where your speeds are crippled id avoid em like the plague.

you do have to use AOL software unless you fork out for the Gold or Platinum service. AOL has a long and horrible history and is not an ISP i would touch with someone elses PC, never mind my own.

As i said above you do not have to use their software, im on AOL Silver 1mb, im not using their software at all, just use the guide from my thread i posted above about making your own connection from the network connections thats you have in the control panel, you do not have to use the software on any of their packages.

i know i used the guide you made to get rid of the software i am also on silver 1mb but im now using a wireless router

Only trouble i had was the e-mails, everytime i tried to access me e-mails from the AOL site i kept getting the page cannot be displayed rubbish, so i had to install the software and connect using it to read em, but good old Google, i don't know why i didn't think of it before, i did a search for accessing my AOL e-mails through another client, and i found a step by step guide for outlook that you get on windows, so ive just set it up, and it bloody works YAY!!.

It was Draegers guide btw, so its thanks to him.

My cousin is on Tiscali 2Mb and it is awful. He cant download because otherwise you get your speed limited for about a month and they compain that you are not obiding by their "Fair Usage" policy. Absolute joke of an ISP. You wont get a ping of below 150+ if you get put on the limited line.

Yup now with the traffic shaping as said it is indeed a joke, why on earth they are putting ppl on MAX 8mb i do not know, its waste, they only allow 10k a sec on 1mb for downloading, 8mb you may get 60k (512k connection)if they are generous, whats the point in 8mb when it can only be used for browsing, you can browse fine on 1mb, pages still load fast, and agree with the above about AOL, migrated to them about 2 weeks ago.

Been on AOL for ten years now, problems so far = 0.
