Cars in for a service and MOT and it's failed on both the front and rear disks and pads. The service guy was mumbling about the disks being only 21.xmm whereas the min is 23mm. So does anybody know what the min thickness should be? Just wondering in case the garage are trying to shaft me.

Also they've quoted 245 to do the front disks and pads and another 245 for the rear so is this a fair price?

EDIT: Crap, in all my excitement forgot to put that the car is a Honda Accord 2.4 Type-S :)

03-08 model?

if so min thickness front is 23mm, rear is 8mm.

And they are pretty pricey parts as well so I wouldn't be surprised by those prices.

Looking on eurocarparts

Front pads are: 37.49
Front discs each are: 47.40 x 2 = 94.80
Rear pads are: 25.00
Rear discs each are: 29.94 x 2 = 59.88

Total = 217.17

So Honda are charging 272.83 labour, hmm, have already asked them if they can give me some more discount but they reckon the price given is the their standard off the self price so is already low.

I suppose the cars got to an age, it's an 03 with 59k on the clock where it's going to need work done to it.

Since I've had the car (got it in 02/2004), apart from servicing, brake pads and tyres I've not had to spend anything on it so I suppose it's to be expected.

Is this a valid enough reason to get rid of the car :D

No, when you click on the product it states per disc.

I think the costs are outrageous and with me doing around 5k miles per years looks like a good enough reason to dump it and start looking for a tree-hugging, economical diesel :)

How are you finding the accord? I'm do similar miles (well about 6000-7000) and looking at some 04 plates, so interested in your thoughts as a owner.

If you've had it for 7 years with no major repairs then that's pretty damn good. Wouldn't change a car because of disc/pads though.

I've found it all in all a real comfortable car to drive. As I said I've not had any major problems with it since I got it some 7 years ago. The seats are comfy, I love the gadgets, suspension can be a bit had at times given the state of the roads.

Car has a reasonable amount of power but does lack torques, for such a big car it handles really well when pushed. I think there have been only 2-3 times where the car scared me but then again maybe I was being a bit over ambitious.

The MPG over the last 2-3 years has also improved, no idea why TBH but I only used to get 250 miles out of the tank but I now get around 300. For me the car goes through front tyres, I have to change the front tyres each and every year.

Inside, the car has developed a rattle from the rear passenger side airbag, got Honda to look at it a number of times when the car was in warranty but they only seemed to fix it for a number of weeks before it came back. Also the headlight lens on my car mist up, mentioned it to Honda and they said they would look into it.

If you get the car serviced at Honda, it can be very expensive, the car has a major service/minor service type schedule so the major would be around 400, the minor around 300.

That's about all I can think of, any questions let me know. I'm thinking of replacing it with either a 330i or 335i but every time I read about problems with the 335i engine I get put off :)

Oh come on, the costs are hardly outrageous. The labour charge is high, but that's your fault for choosing to use a main dealer.

Cheers mate.

As for tyres, what do you use to go through a pair every year at 5k miles?

to date I have tried:

Yokohama AVSdBs, I think these are original factory fit
then tried F1 Asyms (these only lasted me something like 9-10 months)
then tried PS2s
and am currently on my second pair of PS3s

Fix the car then, that's a stupid wear rate.

I've had the car checked over and have been told everything is fine, the tyres also wear evenly across their width. If you have any idea what I should be getting checked then please let me know, someone mentioned the front wheel toe in but I would have thought a geometry check would have checked that?

Anyway, have got the car back with shiny brake disks and new pads all round but my wallet is 675 lighter :(

Amazing how you get used to things, the brakes feel so much better.

I did my mate's 03 2.4 Exec discs and pads all round with EBC oem stuff for about £200.

No one pointed out that discs can't really fail an MOT for being worn to whatever mm, they can only fail for being seriously weakened or warped or pitted enough to cause juddering. You got bent over royally there mate. Main dealers fine till the warrenty is out, then you really should use an independant. Full Honda history will only add about the extra you cost yourself on that bill to the value of your car, so really not worth it. And stamps in a book mean nothing too, you need paperwork to back it up!

Autodata tells me the minimum thickness for front ventilated discs is 23mm. The rear 8mm. :)

even less than that would still pass an mot as long as the discs weren't about to break up, fair enough tell him he needs discs as part of the service, but they had no right to fail the discs if they were just worn. Mot is a minimum standard remember. I bet there was more than 1.5mm of brake pad left too.
