That's the theory and would remove the load from the CPU, but still think it's your connection speed so it'd be worth while doing a few tests to work out exactly what the bottleneck is.

Also remember, that the WHS doesn't serve up all file types for streaming - so if you re-encode a load to make it easier on the CPU, then make sure it's a file type that it can stream or they won't show up/fail when you do try to access them remotely!

i know the video blockyness is my internet speed, as it plays fine over the local network :) just gotta wait for BT to get their finger out and give me infinity.
 
Yep, I'm in the same boat - until I get fibre (next week) I've given up on trying to stream video - with my current upload speeds the quality is so poor it's just not worth while :)

Looking forward to setting up Live Sky HD streaming though when I do get it :D

how you doing that? Slingbox HD?
 
DVB S2 tuners in the HTPC
DVBLink software on the HTPC (which allows the tuners to be virtualised/shared)
Plugin on the DVBLink software to allow card encryption

Dreambox DM500 box running OSCAM and managing the card encryption

It's expensive and a pain to set up, so not for everyone - when you said cheap solution in your other thread - that's why I didn't mention it ;)

yeh that does sound expensive and hassel :p

if i owned my house i would just run an RF cable and magic eye, but its not and would be a stupidly long cable to do it without drilling, which will make the RF signal even worse :( shame there isnt video over lan type of thing i can use.
 
Worth it for me though - and I like having a new project - that was last summer's :)

Cost me about £250 for the software, box and a couple of dual tuners. Then about a day to set it all or up, with a few tweaks every other month or so.
 
my sky hd box sits ontop of my htpc, could i therefore fit a capture card into the htpc, then connect sky box to that with RF and then share it with VLC or something over LAN?
 
Yes, but I found the quality pretty poor.

You can let WMC do the recording in it's .wtv format. In WMC there is a WHS2011 plugin automatically installed, this can automatically move any recordings up to the WHS and then you can playback anywhere you can get at your WHS.

For LiveTV DVBLink does the sharing for me and also creates a DLNA server, so I've not tried sharing using VLC.

I think the biggest challenge will be whether you're happy with the quality you're getting from the Sky box via the RF into your HTPC.

thats a good point, and there is no way of getting the picture into a pc in better quality :(
it will only be going to a 22" monitor upstairs though, so it might be an option.
 
If you could get an old Sky HD box (Thompson) they have component out, you can get capture cards for this, but the later boxes are HDMI only, so HDCP prevents you using the few capture cards that exist.

I don't know what you're running for HTPC software already, but there may be different options with Media Portal or XBMC to share the picture once you have it in the box.

I use WMC because that's what DVBLink works on, and I need that for card entitlements to work but there may be a better way for you.

i use WMC and XBMC (i find XMBC is horrible for music). im pretty sure there is a streaming option in VLC, but have never used it, so not sure what it does. i have a really old Amstrad HD box, not sure on what connections it has.
 
well with the arrival of my Llano chip for my HTPC i needed my HTPC case back, so this is my home server :(
