I avoided Minecraft for months knowing that, much like eating a popular brand of tube-dwelling potato snacks, once I popped, I would not in fact be able to stop.

Finally took the plunge and downloaded Minecraft for my Xbox 360 (only because a bunch of guys on my friends list wanted help building some stuff!) and I was immediately hooked! :-) It's such a nice way to waste countless hours.

Anyway, after seeing the apparent shortcomings of console Minecraft I bought a copy for Mac and now I'm eager to join some sort of community, so naturally I thought of all the nice guys and gals over at OcUK!

However after a quick forum search for 'Minecraft' I was lost in a world of strange jargon - mods, launchers, clients etc..... I just want to join a server and have fun/wander around people's villages/help build some mine cart roller coasters! :-)

With all that in mind, can anyone suggest some good OcUK approved servers to explore, or explain to me all this talk of mods and whitelists etc??!

Whitelist gets you onto a server, without it you'll only have access to freebuild disaster areas full of griefers destroying each others builds and killing each other.

Official OCUK minecraft server with some great folks playing on it, now running the Tekkit mod :)

Unofficial one, never played it but lots of people seem to have bags of fun on it:

There are a few others, Kainzy has his own small server (10 slot, won't compete with above and it's mostly vanilla with very few mods on it). He'd have to know you to give access though :) I honestly don't know of any other MC servers used by OCUK.

Putting this in as I use to be an admin on it, lots of rules though but people who would show you the ropes just as the Linktart folks would: http://hollowworld.co.uk/index.php It is themed and very tightly controlled though.

Mods usually add in extra functionality, such as the ability to lock chests so only you can access them, additional block types, abilities (fly etc) and useful stuff for server admins such as cheat prevention and logging so thieves etc can be caught.

I know exactly how it feels to find a server that is 'vanilla', I gave up looking for one and have not played Minecraft for a while now, started playing from infdev version..

I like to build with a low population server, dislike PvP and hate mods but anti-grief mod tools are great. If anyone can find me a server like this I'd be eternally grateful. :D

I wish you luck sir on your quest to find a good community server.

Thanks for the links! Yeah the mods part is probably the thing I'm most confused about - I assume it's modified versions of Minecraft but what sort of 'features' do modified versions have? And is it like the old days of online gaming where you need to have the right version/mod before it'll let you join certain servers?

Also, launchers - is there any decent ways to 'browse' servers and join them just by clicking, rather than having to enter all the IP addresses etc. manually? I guess I'm looking for the Minecraft version of 'GameSpy' or 'Steam'! (if it sounds like I haven't played online on a computer since the days of Team Fortress, it's because I haven't - I'm a console gamer through and through!! :-))

peanut - some mods needs client side mods installed to work, Tekkit is one of those. others don't though as they only affect permissions etc on the server and don't add in additional blocks or models which the client has to understand. There are other mods you can install for the client side such as Zombe mods for flying etc but those may not be allowed on servers :P

Quite a few graphical mods too now which improve the experience.

That's probably the main server list although the rank on it is very suspect and doesn't mean it's a "good" server.

Great, thanks! I've been reading up on mods (well trying to, there's not much easy to find about what each one actually DOES) and Tekkit is one I've seen mentioned, along with YogBox, Technic and Hack/Mine..... any ideas what each one of them does? Or any sites with an FAQ to mods? I'm surprised there's not more info on this on the wiki (or if there is, I can't find it!)

If either you decide you want to try out kain's server drop me an e-mail in trust or pop onto quakenet IRC and into the #id room where Kain or someone is usually lurking. The linktart and unofficial servers are probably worth checking out before ours though, as ours is a very basic and very small server lol.

the easiest way to get some pretty awesome mods is to use the technic launcher, which you can download from here: http://www.technicpack.net/
the launcher is kind of like having several copies of minecraft on your PC at once with different mods installed, including a vanilla version of minecraft. it installs and updates itself completely automatically so you dont have to faf around with .jar's all day

there are several mod packs available but the ones i use are technic and tekkit, both of which are the mods you may have seen with lots of machines, pipes and power cables. tekkit is a slightly watered down version of technic but tekkit works on multiplayer whereas technic doesnt. if you want to find out how everything works then have a look at the tutorial videos by direwolf20 along with the technic pack wiki if you need it (or an individual mod's wiki if the technic pack wiki doesnt tell you what you need)

server wise i really cant help you, i just pester my friend to start up his server whenever i want to go on

As Halfmad said, if you want to play on a basic server with minimal mods then give myself or him a shout. You won't have to run any mods on your end and all I'll ask you to do is sign upto our forums just for the latest news etc.
