I didn't want to pollute the multiplayer Minecraft thread with this question, but are there any good mods for the single player about? Would like to get something like Minecart Mania (confliting reports on whether it works on single player) as using other carts as boosters can be frustrating. A map mod would also be good if there is one?

Minecart Mania on its current version does not work for singleplayer only multiplayer.

You could always just download and run a minecraft server locally. Set the server to private and connect to it using the ip 127.0.0.1
This way you can run all the mods you want and have the option to invite your friends in.
