Minecraft, What to do?

So i love Minecraft and i think the game is brilliant.

My only problem is i don't know how to play it.

I know that doesn't really make much sense, but when i load a world, i build a few things and then just stop. I find it hard to come up with ideas on what to build and how to adapt the environment around me and the buildings i want to build.

How do you guys play Minecraft?

I use Industrial Craft, Buildcraft and Redpower mods and make the most stupidly ambitious projects that never get finished.

I agree with going for multiplayer. It makes the game so much more enjoyable when you can see what other players have done and work with eachother. The only time I play minecraft singleplayer now is when I want to test a load of stuff out, like redstone mechanics and such without having to care about mobs or running out of materials.
