Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition

So I noticed the UI was same as the Android/iOS version, I decided to load up Minecraft on my Android based phone as well. And then noticed it detects the Minecraft world loaded on my PC. Tried to connect but it doesn't seem to work. Tried the other way round but that fails as well. Oh well, I guess it is in beta at the moment, but would be awesome to have a "server" on the desktop and allow my younger cousins who loves playing this to connect with their iPhones and iPads. I used my phone as a server once... the battery didn't last long :D.

I still prefer normal Minecraft. It's nice they have a built in Java now but the Windows 10 version does feel a lot smoother and uses less resources.

Modpacks when :p?

My 3 year old got all excited when the game I was running on PC showed on his iPAD. I presume the reason they cant connect for now is that they are different version numbers. When they match though I am going to have a couple of very happy kids :)

How can people enjoy playing that pixelated mess is beyond me. Plus its your fault making that neckbeard too rich for his own good.

Because some people enjoy gameplay over graphics. Simple.

And aside from the selling out (which pretty much anyone would do for 2.5billion), Notch is a damn good thing for the gaming community and he is also proven to be a good guy. Don't get the hate for him, what exactly is it that he has done wrong? Even regarding the selling Minecraft thing, he stated it was partly because it was getting too big and he didn't want to be involved in something of that scale (which is something he has always said).

Because of what can be achieved. Building your own things isn't something you get to do in every game.

I'll claim this once I've got W10 installed.

it would be good if it was done in dx12, or just dx in general given how awful java is as a platform for a game, minecraft may run like lightning stock but modded enough to make it a good game it isn't.

oh well, lego managed to do it already, and my inner child approves that they finally did it at last.

From what I have read this windows 10 version doesn't use java at all

Ugh.

Why does the Windows 10 version keep deactivating on me.

I downloadead the paid version that I linked from my Mojang account and the next day it was saying it was only a trial version, so I deleted it and lost my world and re downloaded it and again today it is saying I only have trial version and the timer has just run out.

Why would you want to use this version instead of the normal PC version? I don't really see any point. This Windows 10 minecraft looks like its being set up for loads of additional dlc like skin packs etc which, at the moment, you can just get for free with the standard PC game. Just looks like a way for microsoft to cash in by taking the free mods away and adding all pay dlc.

At the moment, its very strange, Windows 10 version lacks so much. But my GOD is it smooth and more optimized, the game feels amazing in comparison to the Standalone (ish) version. I love it!

I think the Windows 10 version is more of a "port" from the Android/iOS version, in other words the mobile version. This version in theory should also work with Windows 10 based tablets and phones. So not really aimed at the PC user, but more of the mobile user. Hence why it runs better because it was designed for much lower end systems.

You can't blame them for wanting some return on the 2.5 billion (billion, really?) they splashed out on it :p

Personally I can't see how they'll ever recoup that money. Not sure what in the nine hells they were thinking...

This article doesn't explain anything, but here's a quote:
http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/19/microsoft-buying-minecraft-explanation/ said:
Does that sound like a lot, $2.5 billion? Well, it is in human dollars, but not so much when you're Microsoft and you've got $85 billion in "cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments." Regardless of the fact that this week's deal only cost Microsoft around 3 percent of that, here's the real kicker (in the form of a statement from Microsoft): "Microsoft expects the acquisition to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis." Woof, that's a doozy of a sentence right there.

Here's the translation: Microsoft expects the purchase of Minecraft/Mojang to make it a lot of money. And that is why Microsoft bought Minecraft.

Admittedly, that's a rough translation of all that Microsoft's saying in that jargon-filled sentence. And it's a crucial statement in the several-paragraphs-long press release that announced the deal. So let's break it down, piece by piece!

This one sounds simple, but there's a lot of information in there. First and foremost, "Microsoft expects" is a heavily abridged way of saying, "Microsoft lawyers and accountants painstakingly went over the past financials of Mojang and projected earnings for the next two to five years. After doing that work, we expect these results." Companies don't "expect" anything they haven't deliberately calculated. This is not a guess; it's an equation.

The middle bit -- "the acquisition" -- is simply referring to the purchase of Minecraft and Mojang for $2.5 billion. Nothing hidden there.

To be break-even" isn't to say, Minecraft and Mojang will recoup the full $2.5 billion Microsoft spent on the acquisition. Instead, it only has to make about $25 million to make this a "break-even" deal. Why? Well, as reported in Polygon, analyst Michael Patcher pointed out in a talk at Games Beat 2014 that $25 million is about the amount of interest Microsoft could expect to make if it just left that money in the bank. As he puts it:

Well, $2.5 billion, the interest on that is just $25 million a year. When they say break-even they don't mean they're going to get $2.5 billion back. That's sunk cost, they don't care. They're talking about from a GAAP reporting perspective - EPS Microsoft Corporation - they will make more from Minecraft than they lose from not having that money in the bank, generating interest ..."

This makes no sense at all. True, they make more in earnings than the $25 million they'd make in interest payments.

But the interest payments are on top of your 2.5 billion that you have in cash sitting in the bank.

MC earning more than $25 million a year is great and all, but you've *lost* 2.5 billion to increase your earnings!

And you need over 100 years at $25 million a year to get that 2.5 billion back!

It just seems like absolutely bonkers logic.

Started playing this again in my spare time at work. Currently though I copy the world in the appdata/local folder to "sync" my worlds between my desktop and SP4, which is bit of a pain.

Also noticed the account is linked to your Xbox Live account, meaning you can't change your name unless you change your Xbox name (which Microsoft seems to charge). Also, logging into MC on my desktop and then trying to connect with my SP4 brings up the Xbox account conflict. Signing out doesn't work either, seems you can't play the game unless you're signed in. At least Minecraft PE on Android and iOS can connect to it just fine, was fun playing with my younger cousins with their various devices on the same world during Christmas.
