So I'm looking to kill some time but only have my Asus laptop to hand (UL30A) which is pretty basic specwise.

Do you think something like Minecraft could work out for me?

My laptop can handle Minecaft on Normal render distance. 4GB RAM and Intel Graphics Card XD, you should be fine. Run optiFog etc

I remember trying to run vanilla minecraft on the UL30A a while back. Funnily enough in windows it barely ran (around 1 or 2 fps in open areas) but on ubuntu it ran smoothly . I never tried the OptiFine mod though.

unbuntu uses less resources than windows leaving more for mine craft?

Possibly, but the difference was night and day. We're talking consistent 30+fps on ubuntu whereas in windows it would be 1-2fps. A friend of mine had similar results with OSX and windows XP on an old macbook too.

I'm guessing it has something to do with how java works on unix and windows, I don't know what though. I didn't really pursue the issue because my minecraft account expired (I got it with the humble bundle).

loving this although how do you get into build mode as i can only play survival and if you create something good can you play survival on that
