minecraft

My 10yr old son plays it, has it for Xbox, iPad and PC.

The only thing that annoys me is when he watches Youtube and finds a mod. Three hrs later, I am stressed to hell, Minecraft is back to Vanilla and my son is annoyed.

Im not tech savvy, but wish mods were easier to install

You say this, but how easy is it to do such things?

I'm not really au fait with the mechanics of how you turn a piece of grass/dirt into a house.

How would my 8 year old (he plays Minecraft on a iPad at his school, so porbably knows more than me lol) go about knowing what he has to do?

The Wiki is your best friend: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki

The good thing about the Wiki is that generally gives you all the recipes for that material or item. You can then work out what options you have and how you need to chain materials together to get a finished product.

Original Minecraft can be a bit plain after a while so I would recommend Feed The Beast for various packages that will increase your options via a simple loader program that gives you packages of mods as well as new skins to increase the resolution of the textures on all the items in the game.

They also have a Wiki that deals with all the new items and material you get from the addons: http://ftbwiki.org/Feed_The_Beast_Wiki

Quite a few MC players in here and some useful information so I will shoot some quick questions people can hopefully help me with?

I am setting up a server at home to play on. I've got it up and running easily enough and I can connect in with the client and all is well. I am just wondering, beyond the normal server config file and the options contained within this, is there any further configuration or optimisation I can do server side? Or is any modding/optimisation beyond this purely done from the client end and not much other/new snazzy things can be done server side?

Thanks.

Yes, look into custom .BAT files/commands to start your server with. You can adjust things like ram settings etc further using this.

I would get a link for you but am at work and they banned it here lol

Nice one, thanks.

I just seen some of this stuff you refer to. I currently have it set to start on 512mb but can increase to 1GB if required. I'll only be messing about on it myself so it'll do for now.

I am looking at the FTB stuff and it all seems a bit overkill. I am happy enough with the vanilla game, if anything I would just like to add subtle things like nicer textures to make the game look nicer and any other essential little mods people think are very worthwhile to make the game overall better to play.

There seems to be a vast amount of mods, is there a one size fits all good texture pack I can just throw on that people tend to use? I am being lazy here as it's all getting a bit too involved now with so much info to wade through :p

It's all down to personal preference on the texture pack side of things. I use a texture pack called Faithful which is just a slightly better version of the original. Some popular packs that are used are dokucraft, john smiths, sphax bd, soartex, there are some realistic ones; for example misa's and photo realism lb. As you may have said, there are about a bajillion more :)

Mod wise, people do tend (understandably so) to look at the mod packs and be scared of how much there is in there. Just remember, that just because it is there, you don't 'have' to use it. A lot of people start with just learning the mod they are most interested in or by watching a lets play (again, Direwolf20's lets play are really easy to follow and get you up to speed very quickly). Again, this is also down to personal preference and what you want out of MC. This is imo why MC is so good, it can be tailored to what you want out of a game.

This all said, if you are happy with just vanilla at the moment, I would just leave it as is. If you get into enough, some poeple find they want to stay pure vanilla or will naturally seek out the other stuff anyway :)

Thank you very much for the info/advice buddy. Much appreciated.
