I have NO IDEA, on what exactly what the attraction is. I've asked, and left confused. All i know is that they love it, and it seems pretty harmless.

Its stupidly addictive just digging blocks out and replacing them with other things - but if you want it can become very technical. Just youtube search for 'Minecraft Redstone Creations'

I played it a couple of years ago and ended up playing 3 hours a night just looking for diamonds! There's loads of things to learn - crafting, smelting, brewing and building things...

People build things like the Taj Mahal out of gold blocks, huge transport networks etc.

It will keep them entertained for literally years.

I had to stop playing because I was going to bed at 3am and digging tunnels and trying not to die and losing all my diamond picks in my dreams!

Its Lego on steroids, as a kid you get to build what you want to your hearts desire and with Minecraft you can realise your thoughts in a more detailed way than ever before.

I wish I had it as a kid!

One of the discussions you are going to have to have with him is online play.

The only way for him to play with his friends from school (who i presume he means by "everybody else" is by an online gaming server.

These are open to public. which includes adults. Adults who may be not particularly nice to 9 year olds. It may not be anything serious, but most 9 year olds won't take being shouted out and sworn at by strange adults on the internet.

So I'd be asking if he intends to play the game with them, and if so what server are they going on. Has somebody set them up with their own server, or are other parents just buying the game and then just letting them loose on the net.

I suspect the latter. The server versions of minecraft are dead easy to setup and there are loads of guides on how to do it. I'd really consider setting up a server for them to play on thats passworded if you have a suitable desktop spare (won't take more than your average office machine to run a server for 4/5 people)

If the server is just vanilla (which with being first time players I suspect it will), you can get a 24/7 hosted game server from many different places for a pittance. I'm currently renting a server from Mineocity for £3.36/month. My first month (which I am currently on) was only £1.68 using the promo code "SummerSale". When your first month is up you can use the promo code "MCFORUM" for 10% off each month, making it £3/month.

My 10 year old has been playing for a couple of years and still loves it - the stuff he builds is amazing but he'll often spend hours at it. I've never quite figured out how to add mod packages for it though. I've tried numerous managers to install them but they usually just don't work - as soon as word starts getting around the playground about cool-sounding mods, you can probably expect the same :)

Install the package manager for the Feed The Beast series of mods, its very easy. It even installs a copy of Minecraft for you and there is even skin packs as well for these mod packs in the launcher menu options.

My boys love the Sky Survival 2 map, watched countless videos on it and always want to play it when I have them.

I have two boys, an 8yr old and a 6yr old. My 8yr old is pretty much a Minecraft nut. I paid $26 for the PC ver directly from mojang.com. They also have it on the xbox360, and on the iPad. But the PC ver gets to see the most use. Actually last week, i had to cough up for a 2nd copy, so that my 6 yr old could join into the online worlds that the 8yr old has been obsessing over. He plays online, downloads all the maps, and asks me every other day about getting him a mod. He also loves watching the youtubes and being part of the minecraft community.

What I like about it, is its teaching him the PC quite well, and he's now a whizz on the keyboard. He's been doing his own resource packs, and downloading maps. So getting a good idea of pc directory structure.

My 8 year old is similar, loves watching the vids on youtube and also heads onto the fridge servers and the main eu hunger games servers for as much time as I let him.

He had it on the ipad, then xbox and now the laptop.

I played on the ipad version with him (from my iphone) but didn't get the reason for popularity. Tried the xbox version with him but needing to have friends who are playing was a nightmare.
The PC version with proper dedicated servers is much more fun, even I've attempted a couple of games of hunger games!

Anyone know how frankie got his world looking like this as its looks much more impressive than the raw blockiness of the base game:

One tip, if you are gonna team with someone make sure its arranged before game starts. I've had a few people kill me once the game starts and ask to team, as i've started typing they have done me over, cheeky trick lol

Oh and I learned shift clicking last night, that helps at the start a lot!

You say this, but how easy is it to do such things?

I'm not really au fait with the mechanics of how you turn a piece of grass/dirt into a house.

How would my 8 year old (he plays Minecraft on a iPad at his school, so porbably knows more than me lol) go about knowing what he has to do?

I'll lone wolf it! What does shift clicking do?

when you open a chest, press shift and click the mouse button on the item in the chest, it then goes direct into inventory rather than needing to drag it.

makes the mad dash at the start much more worth it as I can now get to a chest and pick something out of it instead of watching it all disappear in the blink of an eye lol

Ah right, I did know that already. Is there any focus on building weapons or just looting from chests and running?

From what I have seen it's more about looting. There are other servers where you start with kits then you need to go and make stuff, I try to stay away from them though as that's beyond my attention span lol

best advice is to watch youtube videos

You don't turn the dirt / grass into a house. You go mining inside the dirt and if you dig down far enough you find Iron Ore and Coal. You can then turn that into iron.

Equally you find Rock, which you can then build your house out of. You can find sand, and turn that into glass. You can find clay and turn those into bricks.

All by smelting using the coal that you find mining. And thats only touching the surface of what you can find when you go mining. Lets talk about obsidian and the nether as thats a whole other world. Literally ...

Minecraft.net is the only place to get a legit key

Best money ive ever spent on a game :)

Exactly, game caters for everyone of all ages and can adapt for what type of game you want too (pvp, survival, adventure, creative etc etc). I have been playing since early 2011 and with the amazing modding community, the game never feels old or repetitive as they add more and more content.

To learn how to use the more in-depth mods - either watch a guy called 'Direwolf20' or 'Duncan' from yogscast on youtube. Both are very helpful (Duncan one is much more basic)

To install mods easily, get either MultiMC (a client which helps you install mods easily but has no ready made packs) or one of the Modpack Launchers - FTB in my opinion has better packs but there is another called technic too.
